pullnshoot25 0
OK, so my Saiga is in the mail (FINALLY ordered one!) and I have just a few questions. 1) I want to keep this in stock configuration (I live in Kali and I hate bullet buttons, plus I like straight stock rifles) but I want a cool sling to go with it. Is this sort of sling feasible with this rifle? I know I will have to add a swivel to the buttstock but can I drill the OEM buttstock and put on such a swivel? http://www.stu-offroad.com/firearms/tacsling/tacsling-3.htm 2) AK-74 mags... there are a few 10rd mags out there and I know I need a BG BUT do I have to modify the mag catch or the magazine to get it to work? I read on another thread here that everything locked up just fine without mods. Is that a fluke or is that standard? 3) Any suggestions for aperture sights or should I just keep it plain? Any help is appreciated!
m1key 7
1) Not sure about that sling configuration, but you can replace the factory sling studs with U.S. swivel-type studs which will allow mounting various sling set-ups or even a Harris bipod. 2) No spare 10-rounders at this time. Surefire is tooling up for Saiga 5.45 mags. We'll have to wait a while. It is NO FLUKE that AK-74 mags will lock up great. But, you will need to add a bullet guide for reliable functioning. 3) I like my fast-acquisition factory sights just fine on all of my AKs. If you find something that works better for you...go for it. Edited September 2, 2009 by m1key
CnRnut 3
You can try to find 10 rd. mags, they did bring some in. I've got 5 of them from my SAR-2's. I've also made some by cutting down EG 30 rd mags. The truth is I was making 45 rd. mags long before any came in,and the "left overs" made an @ 8-10 round mag. I went through 130 rounds last weekend in my new saiga with only one jam. You will be fine if you run 70 gr. ammo without a bullet guide, the shorter 53 gr. might jam though. jimdigriz 580
3) Any suggestions for aperture sights or should I just keep it plain? I very much dislike the notched leaf sight. Slow, with a short sight radius. That said, those who are used to them can do relatively well with them. But after experiencing vast and immediate improvement in both accuracy and speed when I changed out the factory notch sight for the (aperture) Tech Sights on my Ruger 10 22, I can never again be happy with a notched sight, if I have an alternative. So I put Tech Sights on my Saiga. They look great, and are AK-rugged. I haven't fired the gun with them yet; I'm now in the process of converting the gun. But there's a very positive review of them here: http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=92036&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=tech&start=50 (scroll down past the first post) One quick caution though: If you are planning on using a low rise side mount rail for an optic, the Tech Sights will interfere with sliding it on, if I'm not mistaken. I'm going to use an Ultimak for my optic instead. Jim
