Reliability of AR magwell adapters

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on getting a saiga to convert. I'm just stuck on deciding what caliber to go with. My default plan is to get one in 7.62x39, but I really like the idea of having a .223 AK. The fact that I already have a bunch of AR-15 mags has me interested in one of those magwell adapters for a saiga. I'm just a little concerned about the reliabililty of such a setup since I like my guns to be SHTF reliable(as in they can't be malfunction prone at all). So I was wondering what the current opinion is on these things. I'm looking at the magnolia one since it looks good, but I'm not sure.

As far as I know Magnolia has the only AR adapter. I have one and I can tell you it works. It was a pain to get fitted so I would suggest you have someone with a mill do the proper cuts.

Just ordered mine tonight. I will be installing and testing ASAP, so I will be sure to post my results.

I've put a couple hundred rounds through my MSA adapter now. No failures yet.

It is a pain to install and requires a lot of fitting. If you are at all squeamish about cutting up your rifle then have someone else do the work.

Once it's in there it seems to be a solid piece of gear. Another nice feature is that you don't need a bullet guide if you are using the adapter.

I have the Magnolia State Arms adapter. I ordered it when it was first offered as a "Zytel" insert. That didn't work out in Beta testing and was later offered as a CNC aluminum part. I did all of the installation work myself with a Dremel and a file. It took a bit of careful grinding and filing and fitting but in the end, I'm quite satisfied. P-Mags worked properly immediately. 30 rd Aluminum military spec mags ( C-Products) needed a tad more depth to work properly. 20 round mags (NHMTG) needed some filing on the front edges to slide in.

All the adapters on the market today are reliable and have different degrees of difficulty installing. All accept all mags, although some minor and quick sanding may be required for some. The reason is the geometry of feed. to get it correct, the adapters must hold a certain angle, and all mags are not created equal.

I guess y'all haven't seen renegadebuck's adapter?

Thanks Nalioth, but that was the old one that I hand made. here's the new.

Hey Renegadebuck...your design inspired me to fabricate my own My adapter project ...what a PITA! I made mine with a sleeve to go up into the magwell for extra support. More importantly, are you still selling yours and do you have a clearer photo of the finished product? I made mine just for shits and giggles, but wouldn't trust it for a SHTF scenario. MSA hasn't responded to my inquiries...understandably so...and you seem to be the only one who might have a functioning product.

renegadebuck,

Looks nice!

I'm definitely interested in your product, as I just picked-up a new .223 Saiga rifle.

However, I have a few questions...

Firstly, what is the asking price for yours?

Secondly, are there any 'mods' to the receiver required for fitting properly?

Finally, are there any installation instructions you have for this item yet? You see, I want to gauge how 'involved' it will be to install this mod on my rifle.

Thanks in advance for your attention to my questions.

Cheers,

alaj70

PS: any website link you can send me to for a looksie?

I looked at your thread and your adapter looks like everyone's first one. Your follower problem is a matter of feed geometry. It's not real hard to get it right on one, but it's a real PITA to repeat it consistantly. I made all of my prototypes out of an Escort hood and welding rods! I actually used one similar to yours for almost a year. I just was never happy with the left hand release. I have several AR's and was used to the pushbutton and worse, liked it. I was never really happy with any of the designs until the present one. I learned a lot about feed geometry, gun fabricating protocall, safety engineering, and more that I never thought I'd want to know. I know it's almost impossible to hit a primer with the bolt face and set it off. It's the "almost" part that worried me and had to be solved before selling to anyone else!

Hehe...if I succeed in making one I would be happy. I have no plans on repeating the procedure. I rethought the idea and posted my plans in my other thread...ambi-release and no welding needed. 80% complete...just need to grind out the small channel on the left side for the bump on the AR mags and install a mag catch. Its not a rock and lock design though.

I saw it, if you're talking about the milled out aluminum. Good luck! I don't like working with aluminum as it's so soft it fouls my tools. If I had the correct tooling, maybe, but not with regular mechanic shop tools! With my setup, it would take too long and be too frustrating just cutting that channel. How many times did you have to clean your rock, file or whatever you used?

Used a wire brush to clean the file which got clogged up alot. I have since given up on the project and set my Saiga up for milspec mags instead.
