Need GAS PISTON Replacement Advice and SKELETON Buttstock On .308?

Recommended Posts

Please advise me on Gas Piston removal from the charging rod/handle on a .308.It appears to be pressed and swaged into the charging handle from the factory.Who makes a USA replacement gas piston version for the 308?Also who makes or stocks an American made Skeleton Buttstock (like the Russian OEM style) in wood or synthetic for the 308?.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Thanks nalioth & saigafreake. The extendable stock is very nice and is compliant, but I would prefer the fixed skeleton stock shown on the Centerfire Systems site,....only it does not list "compliant" or location of manufacture.Does anyone know if it is USA made or if another site carries a US clone?

The piston replacement sounds relatively simple.Who carries a reasonably priced made to fit(drop-in) US gas piston? What do you think of using permament threadlocker on the new gas piston threads, and tacking the holes after drilling and replacement with a MIG welder and dressing it smooth with a file? I know the weld will not adhere to the stainless steel threads, but should hold them in place.Or,is the threadlocker sufficient?

Do it like the commies do - stick a rivet in it.

Any US made piston will do.

Thanks. The skeleton stock is "Made in Russia"(bogus).Does anyone know of a USA manufacturer?

Are you ready for more confusion?

The Russian Saiga thumbhole stock is not considered to have a pistol grip (so it only counts for one part on the list).

Not really bogus at all. If your talking about the skeleton stock imported by Russian- American Armory Company, the importer of the Saiga Sporterized rifles from Izhmash in Russia, and sold in the US.

The Russian-American skeleton stock is for use on a non-converted Saiga rifle, keeping the sporterized FCG in place as it comes from Russia, near the back of the receiver.

Most of the sweet US made skeleton stocks are for CONVERTED Saiga rifles with the FCG repositioned forward in the normal Kalashnikov design. You must then be sure to meet 922® parts count requirements to then be legal, having altered the rifle to a non-sporting configuration.

Search is your friend. All the answers are here as well as other gun places on the net. If you'll simply click on some of great sponsors links here...Mississippi Auto Arms is one..., all the answers will unfold...it's like magic!
