Mr. Kalashnikov 0
Has anyone here taken the plate off the top of their gas tube. It looks like it is only held on by a few tack welds. I'd like to remove the plate and put a couple vent holes in the tube.
1liter 20
yep, just tack welded on. Peal it back with a flat head screw driver, and clean up the spot welds with a file. A little touch up paint. Walla!
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
Have you done it to yours? I'd love to see a couple pictures.
Paulry 50
I was converting today and looked at the tube thinking the same thing! I have never seen photos of it that I recall. Ya, post some pictures if you've done it.
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
I'm thinking about doing it tomorrow after church sometime. I think all I will really need is a file and a flat head screw driver. A dremel might be a lot easier than a file.

Mr. Kalashnikov 0
I will try.
Nailbomb 10,221
I did this on Barry. The gas tube used is the original with the tack welds and plate removed. Used a dremil, Started with a stone, and went to sanding disks for fine work.
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
I removed the plate last night at around 1 in the morning. I took a bunch of pictures today.
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
Here is the gas tube with the plate removed.

Frankyoz 15
I hope so or questions are going to be raised lol
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
I think I might drill a couple holes in my gas tube to help it vent. I don't really care for all the crud going into my receiver. Do you guys think a couple 1/8" holes on the side would work fine?
sailor 6
Does anyone know why the Saiga has the "tacked on cover"? Does it have any structural, or other use? Seems like a source of retained heat, just where you don't want it.
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
I think it's just cosmetic. The Saiga has no upper handguard so to make things look pretty they put a plate on it.
Nailbomb 10,221
I did this on Barry. The gas tube used is the original with the tack welds and plate removed. Used a dremil, Started with a stone, and went to sanding disks for fine work. Your rifle's name is Barry?? LOL Named after Halle Berry right?? Nope, named it after the current president. If you think about it it works! The gun was made in a comunist country and our president... well... some of his ideas are... sortof... you know...

Has anyone done this. Im thinking that it probably wont, but would like to doublecheck with users who have done this mod.

1liter 20
I did my 308 years ago. Still guiding the rod just fine!
danklab 57
I did this on Barry. The gas tube used is the original with the tack welds and plate removed. I was thinking about putting one on the 7.62 conversion I just did. I like the factory forend, but something just doesn't feel quite right about it.. seems like the swell in it is a little too low. I've had it on my first S-12, and on my x39 saiga... Its finctional, but i was never a huge fan either. I went to a chaos tri-rail on my S-12, and I'm hoping to get some custom wood for my x39. Both of those guns will be getting some updates this year.
Mr. Kalashnikov 0
If all works out I will drill a couple holes in my gas tube later today.
Blackjack_21 0
I did mine as part of the conversion process, since I think that fluted tube looks better than that tacky folded metal plate. I just ground away with the Dremel and cleaned it up with light passes of the sandpaper drum. I painted it with Dupli-Color engine enamel and it looks just as good, if not better, than the factory spray paint. Now, if getting this canted front sight fixed was this easy... BaronVonBigmeat 0
So...does this mean you could use this with a two piece handguard setup? As opposed to replacing the gas tube?
