What if your side holes have been welded?

You can use the top screw and then use the grip nut as the second secure point sitting over the 2 arms.

I ran into the issue where the side screw holes don't line up. I widened one a little bit on the receiver, but it wasn't good enough. Any suggestions? Maybe a style of bit or something to open the hole in an oblong fashion?

If the tang is cut flush it should line up. Set the back of the receiver on a table to verify it sits flush and does not wobble. You can then elongate the receiver hole with a file if they still do not line up.
