I'm almost done.

I received my short Vertical grip and the 1" riser but the riser is too short.

I just have to fix the following things and the first one will be done:

Replace 3 slot 1" riser with custom modified version.

Replace rear sight with flip up unit

Counter bore back screws and replace them with button head allen screws

Extend Middle and Top Rail sections to completely cover the gas tube.

Once all of this is done I see how it shots and if it does well I'll modify my other 7.62 the same way.

Pure AK-47 Bull Pup Porn   It was a good day in the shop       I still have a lot of work to do but I think my rail looks a lot better then this       I'm sure I can make this work on m

Cool project, Boba, but bull-pupped Kalashnikovs still look clumsy and wrong to me. I just don't see how it could be comfortable/natural to fire with the grips so damn close together.   Imo, if a

Sorry for the misunderstanding, the second pic in your first post is what I was after. I'm just not a big rail fan. Maybe I'd better change my outlook! I understand that a rail mounted on the dust shield would be kind of impercise, but we are dealing with a shotty after all. I don't like a 2 1/2" sight on the end of the gun to get snagged up on stuff. I realize you are doing rifles, but that would be a killer app on an S-12 as well, ( the factory pic in your original post, sans sights). It just has a cool vibe. The mods you have made on the rifle, SERIOUSLY have my thinking of buying a rifle. I just didn't want to add a whole new caliber to have to buy. I know it's sacriledge, and I haven't even looked, but do they make a .223 AK? Please don't tase me!

It would be very hard to fit the factory kit to an S-12.

Plus the front covers get hot fast which is why you see a lot of these with vertical grips.

When I convert my S-410 and S-12 I'm going to use the same quad rail system but I'll go with a simple, low set of iron sights since co-witnessing will not be an issue

One thing I like about my rail is that it blends the pistol grip/trigger housing into the receiver better.

When I'm done I think most people won't beleive that it isn't a factory made rifle.

OK, stupid question time, can you put those "snap in plastic covers" into the sides of the rails to smooth it out? or are they only for a certian manufacturers rails? Your work is very, very bad ass.

Yes, I have a set of covers for this rail I just haven't slapped them on there yet.

Thanks for the compliment on the work. I have modified several UTG rails to fit my various guns but this has got to be the most involved.

Once I have modified my second Bull Pup I will offer this rail on a very limited basis, there is a lot of work to make it fit and it requires 2 different rails so the material cost is high.

BUT I would love to see a few of these on someone else's gun.

Hey BD, looks good. What's it look like with the stubby w/o the extension? Also, have you thought of attaching a "half tube" to the bottom of the top rail to cover the spaces between it and the rifle?

I don't think you could hold the vertical grip without the spacer.

Since I will eventually run the top rail the entire length of the gas tube I didn't want to waste one of the covers by cutting it for a temporary cover.

Have you seen the Magpul back up sights (MBUS)? They might be the right height to co-witness. Look pretty cool too. I found some cheap-o metal-alloy TROY knock-off airsoft sights for less than $40 for the pair, but don't know if it would be worth it to purchase them until I can afford the MBUS. Let me know and I'll send you a link to 'em if you want to take a look.

I like those Magpul sights, I just saw them on an ACR at a local gun shop.

The more I think about the more I lean toward reducing the length of the upper rail.

This is a 0-100 yard weapon. I'm going to take it to the range and shoot it with the rear sight all the way back and then more toward the middle. If it shoots just as good at 100 yards from the middle position I will definitely cut it to be more like this picture:

Progress016.jpg

If I do cut it down I would use a much lighter looking sight system such as the Magpul but I think it would be worth the extra money.

The first mock-up that you posted showed the rear sight in a place that would be completely unusable, unless you have an 18" prehensile neck. The later one shown above would be far more realistic, but that short sight radius is problematic. In my opinion, Bullpups are at their best with red-dot optics.

I don't understand. Why would I need 18" prehensile neck to use the fully extended top rail?

I had the sights on it and didn;t have a problem getting good cheek weld and sight alignment.

With the exception of the Magpul back Up Sights, a holo/red dot optic and accessories such as a light or laser,

ITS DONE

It went from this:

I like the shorter top rail and the modified 1" riser looks a lot better and provides a more secure mount for the Vertical Grip.

This gun is awesome to handle. It feels great in your shoulder and the grips are not too close together. When you hold this you get a rock solid balanced feel that just provokes attitude.

As soon as I get my Magpul BUSs I'm taking it to the range.

When I build my other 7.62 bull pup I will post the modifications in better detail.

I would like to see a photo from the right side of the rifle showing the selector if possible.

Once again I salute your originality and workmanship but can't help but question functionality.

It looks like it would take quite a lot of time to breakdown, clean and reassemble.

Best of luck with your new creation.

PA, think of it as the poor man's P90, esp if you SBR it.

BD, any pics with mags(maybe a 75rnd drum, just curious)?

DaveM, I can do everything on my S12(Safety, Mag swap, bolt lock/charge, etc) with either left or right hand and stay on target doing it, if needs be. Not sure what it takes to feild strip an AK but even if you're pulling the gas block to clean the ports, I don't think there's much diffence(Not necessary on the S12).

I'll post some pictures from the right side and with a magazine once I get the MBUS

With the exception of the gas tube it doesn't take any longer to break this down then the normal AK

I'm a clean freak with my guns. They all get a thorough cleaning after each range trip.

One of the beauties of the AK is it's ease of cleaning.

Just looks like a lot of screws to remove and replace to do the normal field strip and cleaning procedure.

Can you even remove the receiver cover without first removing that plastic cheek weld piece?

Hey, to each his own. Just looks like a PITA to clean to me.

The rear cover comes of as is.

I can break this gun down in about 10 seconds, just like a regular AK

The only thing that is impeded by the quad rail is the gas tube and you can get that pretty clean with out removing it.

The 6" sight radius is going to suck

I might just go with a back up front sight post with a halo style optic.

I'm finally done.

I'm going to start the mods on my other gun now that the first is done. I'll update the other thread with a step by step explanation of how I built this as i do the work.

Here is a comparison of the original rifle and my version

Original: 27" long / 17" LOP / 7 pounds unleaded

Mine : 29" long / 18" LOP / 8.6 Pounds

I shot the bull pup today.

I had 2 mechanical issues

1. The disconnector does not reset correctly. I have to push the bull pup trigger forward to get it to pop the disconnector up to release the hammer. I don't know if this is something I can fix of if I have to send it to the manufacturer

2. The Bull Pup trigger gets HOT. Someone on another forum said they ground part of the trigger linkage so that it didn't sit up against the barrel. I may do this once I get the disconnector issue fixed

Now for a report on the sights and scope.

I was shooting off hand with no support at 15 yards.

With the Magpul PTS Back Up Sights I put 40 rounds into an 8" group, I didn't even have to adjust them. I just aimed at the top of the bullseye

With the Sightmark scope and the laser I put 40 rounds into a 4" group.

Over all I'm happy with the gun. Once I get my laser bore sight I'll get serious with some sand bags but today was just a quick session to get used to the rifle.

Come on man, pics and/or vids or it didn't happen.
