silverphoenix 11
I just ordered a non-converted Saiga 5.45x39. I have a few questions: *Can I use AK74 milsurp mags without modifying my rifle? What modifications do I need to use them? Are there 30 round saiga mags for this? *Will using 30 round milsurp mags cause me to have to replace parts to be 922 compliant? *If I don't convert it, can I slap on one of those ugly bastard stocks with the pistol grip on the stock and still be 922 compliant or what do I need to change out then? *I have been quoted $450 to convert the saiga, which I think is REDICULOUS, but I don't have the tools to do it myself; is there anyone who charges a fair price to do this? $200 and under??? Not that difficult to do; the very few tools you need are inexpensive.

volkov 318
The tools you need to do it yourself are as follows 1: a drill, 30 dollars and.. thats it! It's easy, looks hard but these guns were made for the average commy to be able to work em in war, they disasemble and reassemble in such a straitforward fashion when you do it yourself. I SUCK at most things but converting a saiga is ridiculously easy. If you doubt your abilities at least remove the FCG before you send it to the gunsmith (who's going to replace it anyway) and you'll realize how easy these things are to work with and likely decide to do it yourself (the pin retaining spring kind of sucks to put back in, it's the only dificult part, but if you get a retaining plate, which many venders here sell, its VERY easy)
silverphoenix 11
I think I may call up a couple TX people who offered help on that thread. I have a S12, but never even considered converting that. I'm Really wanting to do my 5.45x39 saiga justice though and revert it back to the way it was supposed to be. Are there any parts kits I can get for a self conversion that are any good?

silverphoenix 11
I get that part, but I'm wondering what parts, if any, are already US made on a saiga when it's imported in its sporterized version? Aren't the disconnector and hammer US made?

rigrat 7
Wow what a answer. If I remember correct the factory Saiga has 14 countable compliance parts. You could change the FCG=3, and the Buttstock=1,and that should give you enough US parts to use larger capacity magazines.
silverphoenix 11
That's exactly what I needed to know; I think I have all the parts lined up that I'll need to use for the conversion; I was very kindly offered some help on converting my saiga. Using the following parts; comments appreciated. http://www.dinzagarms.com/saiga_545x39/545ftk.html Bullet Guide $25 http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/single-hook-g2-trigger-group-tapco-p-156.html Tapco G2 FCG $27 http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/ak-detachable-double-rail-side-mount-p-367.html rail $35 http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/tapco-intrafuse-saiga-shotgun-rifle-trirail-handguard-de-p-562.html Forearm $41 http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=170267 Pistol Grip $16 http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-163/Ace-Folding-Mechanism-Saiga/Detail folding mechanism $60 http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/ace-75-skeleton-stock-p-164.html stock $65 http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/saiga-internal-stock-adapter-sandline-tactical-p-1186.html stock adapter $35 I'll save $150 and have it configured with the exact parts I want; just doing the mag and pistol grip conversion; decided to leave the forearm as-is. Thank you again for all the help!

When you find someone selling a US-made trigger that'll drop in, please let me know. The factory trigger is made up of part numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10 in this picture: Oh yeah, let me know how you'll change it out, too (everyone seems to want to destroy item number 10 during the disassembly). beefcakeb99 572
hmmmm, I am not seeing the disonnect spring there. Missing a part?
rob-cubed 74
You are golden with this list. Keep in mind 922r is not how many parts you've replaced, but how many foreign ones are on the gun. So anything you add after replacing the FCG and rear stock must also be US (like a pistol grip, muzzle device, etc) to keep it compliant and still use foreign-made mags. As others have said, conversion can be done with a hand drill and a few hours. There are some good tuts on YouTube. The only thing people have really screwed up is tapping the trunnion. Go slow and use plenty of cutting oil and you'll be fine. Get some nylon hole plugs to fill the receiver holes.
