Saiga7081 5
I installed the bullet guide. Used punch (bought at HF) and all the kit that came with it. Didn't take long at all. Used red thread lock too. Purchased all the tools at Harbor Freight & parts at Carolina Shooters. Look right? The bullet just slides in. No room to spare. paprotective 362
You may want to hit the edge a hair with a file at angle.. in case you want to run HP rounds.. they may smack the edge and just stop till proper break iin occurs... it also helps get it 'broken-in' faster... BpS12 512
Thanks guys, this was something I have been a bit worried about in planning to buy a Sx39. Nice job and good advice.
ChileRelleno 7,067
Word, it is very easy to do. I did my x39 today, took me 15 minutes... And that included my four yr'ol wanting desperately to help Daddy and doing a wonderful job of getting underfoot Parts/tools from CSS. #1 concern on this job is drilling/tapping straight on axis, followed by working the tap properly, i.e. 1/4-1/2 turn in, back out, repeat, and keep it well oiled. Yours looks back some. Bummer. I watched a youtube video that showed how and he said to push it fwd all the way. Mine does load. Close though. No bummer here, it is set all the way forward under the barrel's face, the overhang is par for the course and the reason why the Saiga factory/aftermarket mags must be modified to fit under this lip. 7) Insert a magazine. The factory and aftermarket Saiga magazines will need to be notched out in the front to clear the bullet guide. (see sketch on right )The guides are longer and protrude into the front of the magazine. This was done to maximize reliability across a wide variety magazines. Milsurps 4 Me 14
I went the cheap way and got a Bulgarian BG from K Var. I had to shave off the bolt stop and shorten it a little but still left it long in the back. I drilled and tapped it for a phillips head screw, used loctite and Dremel bits to shave down the screw head and buff the hell out of the lip and screw. Feeds 100% with any mags/ammo in slow, rapid, and bump fire. I'll admit I was most nervous about this part of the conversion but found it was just as as the rest.

Your last pic looks mine unless someone disagree? I didn't touch my mag. I bought the AK style mag not the Saiga. Unless its the same?
ChileRelleno 7,067
No, not the same, the milsurp and Saiga have their distinct differences. Which of course is why we need the damned guides in the first place
Saiga7081 5
Ok. Good. The Saiga is good to go w/out mod on magazine. Thanks Edited October 13, 2010 by Saiga7081
shades_of_grey 1,092
Here's my bullet guide, (SGL21 rifle)... I find your bullet guides to be "lacking". I've never had any problem using any standard AK mag, (from a 5 to a 75rnder), fwiw. No filing was necessary to use all types of ammo, (FMJ, JHP, soft point), the friction of passing rounds does the "polishing". ChileRelleno 7,067
Took my newest lady to a smorgasbord today, she ate everything in sight, and then belched magnificently when repeatedly bumped. She looked really secksy with'er new Romanian MilSurp mags.

SuperMachoMan 0
so what exactly happens if you try to use a standard ak47 magazine in a saiga with out the bullet guide? Id imagine the bullet tip would go straight into the bottom of the chamber and not feed rather than into the opening right?

Id imagine the bullet tip would go straight into the bottom of the chamber and not feed rather than into the opening right? It'll blow up in your face! The bullet guide install is so easy, no one should be nervous about it. And there are plenty of pics/threads on here to help a person out.
