Cleaning the Saiga-12

Recommended Posts

New to the Saiga-12 and wanted to know how to clean the gas tube. Shot mine once over the weekend, about 75 rounds and watched a video on youtube about field striping the Saiga. Actually got it apart and back together again ( a minor victory ), but had a hard time getting the puck out. Had to use a rod to push it out and found it to be pretty dirty.

Want to clean it this weekend and wanted to know what to use to clean the gas tube.

Figured I'd use a 12 gage cotton swab and go from there. Any better ideas? Also do I need to worry about the gas ports getting clogged up and if so how to work the crud out of them, pipe cleaners, compressed gas ( the computer kind ) or some other tool.

Thanks....Teemch5

I enjoy cleaning my firearms almost as much as I enjoy shooting them. Saiga 12 gas puck removal: do you simply push it out of the gas tube? Out the front or back of the tube? Then to re-assemble: push plug back in the way it came out, or push it back in from the other end? How much lube on gas plug? Thanks

after removing gas plug, push puck out the front (its impossible to push out the back ;) ) do not use lube on the puck.

I usually run a cleaning rod from the rear of the gun up through the gas tube and push the puck out the front. I don't think it matters which way it goes back, but since I'm OCD I always match up the wear marks and put it back the way it came out. It goes in the same end as it came out of, just push it in there past the threads with your finger. Don't use any lube, it'll just make a sticky mess. I usually don't even clean the puck, because the built up carbon on it helps seal the action and make it more efficient.

I use a 12ga wire brush dry to push the puck out and clear fouling. A Scotch Brite green pad to clean the piston, and the only lube a bit of anti-seeze on the blind plug threads. The rest gets a good brushing with a stiff nylon brush with Mobil 1, and a wipe with a soft rag. If the bore is nasty it gets Hoppe's #9. Mostly Mobil 1 on a patch does just fine.
