I have a new Baby (Saiga)!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Just got back from visiting Nate at Mississippi Auto Arms (Forum sponsor) in Oxford, MS! Let the rstoral begin!

Izhmash IZ-132 Saiga, 16.3" barrel, dimpled receiver, manufactured 10-09. Factory certificate says 91mm at 100 meters. (That's about 3.5 inches with the terrible linkage trigger) It has a Round trunnion and A THREADED BARREL!!!!!!! I was very pleased to find a tiny bit of thread showing at the muzzle that I was able to confirm was there as it grabbed my fingernail. I may go with an AMD65 brake or maybe get a 14mm L/24mm R adapter and put on a Krink flash hider I got from Big Sal.

Speaking of Nate, what a great guy and great shop. A class III toy store. Nate sold out of the Saigas, but because I had made arrangements to pick it up today, he held one back for me. He gave me an awesome deal (details confidential) and even discounted it $15 when I decided not to take he 10 round factory mag that came with it. Great guy, great prices, and very knowledgeable about all forms of "Black Rifles" If you ever get to Old Miss and Oxford, stop in and see him. A big thanks to Nate.

NOw this afternoon, I start the restoral. Since I am doing this on the cheap, initially it will be a utilitarian restoral: Tapco AK grip, Texas AK FCG, out of print FSE polymer/resin fixed "triangle" stock that looks like a Krinkox stock, and a ventilated factory hand guard with a heat shield fabricated in it. Gas tube, retainer, etc. will come later.

I could wet myself like a happy puppy!

Here's a quick pic. I already fitted the magazine, but forgot to get a 3/4" pipe nipple to fashion a bullet guide. FSE triangle stock (Bigsal), East German sling (I think) $1` at yard sale, Tapco grip (from MAV) and Texas AK FCG courtesy of BigJ480. I think I will call it my "Band of Brothers Build" Hs a nice ring to it!!!!!

Have not done the handguard yet. It will look like this (from an earlier one I did two years ago.

SaigaConversionAMD.jpg

I use shiney aluminum duct work to cut and fashion a trough in the handguard. Worked really well. Cut the heating of the factory handguard in half.

I may go with an AMD65 brake and a crush washer since my Barrel is threaded 14mm L like I did on the one in the picture from a couple years ago. I may also go with a 14mm L version of the M16A1 flash hider. They are cheap but effective. Third choice is to dig up a 14/24 adapter and use the Krink I have.. They are cheap but effective.

Hey. What the heck kind of stock is that? It looks like an AKS triangle stock that mounts to the standard trunnion, without a folding mechanism. Where did you get that?

Pretty cool stock. It is what you say it is. I think FSE (Make Russian style grenade launching recoil pads now) made them awhile back. It is like a glass filled resin like "tough stuff" rigid but not brittle. I got it from Big Sal. I REALLY like it. It is exactly like the Krink stock without a hinge.

Here are some updates:

First, fabricated a bullet guide from 3/4"i.d. galvanized pipe. Didn't have a template, just eyeballed it and modified a little at a time until it fit perfect and fed fine.

Then drilled the hand guard with 7 3/8" holes on each side for better ventilation. used a pencil to mark of a grid 1" apart, about 1/2" down. Used a small drill (1/8" to drill pilot holes, opened it up with 1/4" and finished with 3/8". TAKE your time.

Then took some aluminum duct work material and made a U shaped trough liner. Nothing fancy, but it doesn't show and works well.

Then mounted it. cycled several magazines through by hand, fast, slow, right side up and upside down. Fed flawlessly.

Well, my baby is done for now, except cutting the barrel shroud back to get the 14mm threads available. Notice that I modified the Texas AK hammer and replaced the BHO device after shortening the protruding lever. Probably stick with this hand guard set up for awhile, at least. I think I will go with the 14mm / 24mm adapter and use the Krink can I have. That will look sexy.

Nothing fancy, no whistles and bells and Tacticool stuff hanging off. Light and simple. 6.8 pounds empty (no Magazine). Bald, fat old Irishman like me don't need Tacticool rifles to fight roving zombies, hoards of flesh eating ghouls, or jack-booted storm troopers. Just need an ultimately reliable weapon to protect the home & farm from 2 legged goblins and trolls, and 4 legged vermin.

Thanks to my friends for helping it happen....

Thanks, I drilled each side independently. Started from breech end on both sides: 3/8" holes spaced 1" on center. If you make a grid in pencil and use the three drill process drilling carefully you do not need a end mill or drill press.I just cradled in in a machinist vise padded with a folded dish towel. It came out as straight as the last time when I used a drill press with less hassle.

The factory hand guard modified this way grows on you. Cooler than factory, protects the fingertips from AK finger sizzle from wandering to far forward with the off hand, cheap, and looks like a cross between a Valmet and a Cetme.

Congrats, I really want one in 7.62x39, but too afraid that I might receive one without dimple if I order online.

Call CSS or MAA, ask whats in stock, they'll tell ya if they have one.

I did this with MAA, I got my sweetheart with cute dimples

@ the OP

Very nice job, looks great! :smoke:

I love seeing people do it themselves with less common mods.

Thanks. I am not a goo-gah kind of guy. Fir example, my favorite folding stock is a Romanian "push button," and the only forward pistol grip I like on AKs is a Romainian G model donkey dick! Low-tech but very sturdy and effective.
