rob-cubed 74 Posted October 30, 2010 Report Share Posted October 30, 2010 I can't answer your question about that exact gun, but most guys will use MinWax clear varnish and tint it with Rit dyes (yes, the clothing dye). Add some Rit to denatured alcohol then filter to get the chunks out. This colorant can be added directly to the varnish, or used to stain the wood itself, or both. Between red, yellow, and brown you can mix any color under the sun. Steel wool is used between coats for surface prep and a thinned coat of varnish will create that final, shiny coat. The original Russian furniture uses shellac but this will be more expensive unless you are going for historical accuracy. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
