Nick White 5
I'm looking for a bipod from my s308. I'm just looking for a cheap one that will hold my rifle steady, preferably one that I can take on and off and doesn't need a rail. I'm not sure what it's called though. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Does anyone have any recommendations? UTG makes a good one. It costs about $20 and has worked pretty damn well on my Remington VTR. It can mount through a sling swivel (they provide a picatinny adapter); you could just add a piece of polymer rail and just be done with it though. Don't expect to use the extended mags with it though. If you're totally against any modification to the gun what so ever (adding a swivel or a rail), I guess the only other option you're left with is a barrel mounted bipod. Nick White 5
Thank you. It's not that I'm against it, I just don't have a front rail.
jhansjr 8
+1 on what Salmonking said. Here's my 308 with the UTG Bipod (SWAT/Combat Profile, Adjustable Height, Rubberized stand). Got it off Amazon for $20.I use the pic rail mount. It does come with a swivel mount as well. With Factory 8 round mag And with a FBMG 20 rounder The bipod does extend from about 6.2 to 6.7 inches high. In the pic with the 20 rounder, it's on it's 6.2 setting. Of course, it is attached to a rail on the lower handguard that extends down a bit more than a standard factory handguard would.IN addition, the bipod collapses as seen below:
vintagedude88 16
Just get this and call it a day. http://www.bizrate.com/hunting-archery-equipment/oid1159626740.html
Nick White 5
And it comes with the stuff to mount it to my S308? It's wood.
DrThunder88 912
I attach my bipod to the bottom of my receiver via the handguard screw. It is a M5x0.8 screw, which, serendipitously, is nearly identical to the 10-32 threads used in most sling swivel studs.
RobRez 1,895
You could always get "Shooting Sticks". I just made my own by simply tying 2 dowels together with strong rope.
Nick White 5
I considered those, but it seems clumsey and a pain in the ass to lug around.
Nick White 5
Well I got my UTG bipod and it looks BAD ASS. I was wondering, can someone take a closer pic of the bipod on the sling swivel mount?
x_man586 7
I got one from Walmart. $40 or so. I mounted it on the handguard and put in a longer screw. It is solid.
Nick White 5
The Winchester one? I was thinking about gettin that one. But I've heard good things about UTG.

volkov 318
Broke what I think was a UTG (got it second hand, it siezed up and a mangled screw literally fell out of one of the leg joints one day, it worked fine for a few more range trips then siezed up on the locking-unlocking lever on one of the legs).. Also the UTG used to be pretty lose and swiveled too much. bought the winchester from wal mart. Liked it enough I bought another one for my mosin. edit: the walmart winchester one attacks to swivel mounts. Edited March 3, 2011 by volkov
Nick White 5
My UTG has a rail that I screw into the swivel stud. I didn't know they made the rail that you put in the swivel stud. I was thinking id have to get the synthetic grip with rails on it. I wanted my wood stocks. But the UTG is pretty sturdy.
Fallschirmjager667 729
utg makes a bipod that clamps on to the barrel for about $8. can be removed quicker than any other kind of bipod
SOPMOD 254
Install a sling swivel stud near the front of your rifle's forend. Attach a Harris or Rock Mount Bipod.
