Got My Russian AK100 Folder Installed

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. A while ago, I sent my SGL21 off to Troy at In Range, for him to install a Russian AK100 folding stock, re-park and re-finish it for me. Got her back earlier this week! Couldn't be happier with the results! The stock looks and works great and Moly Resin finish is impeccable! He re-finished EVERYTHING, not skipping out on any details. I mean like, he re-finished the stuff under the muzzle brake, after cleaning all the built-up gunk off the crown area and threads, all the internals, etc. Basically, the rifle has never looked this good when it was new! I am very impressed. Any way, here is the obligatory gun porn:

Looks nice

Is your Hinge/Folder setup using one of those Kvar hinge pins that adapts 4.5mm to 5.5mm ?

Work OK?

What was the time frame to get the work done?

Cheers,

Harv

I don't know about the hinge pins. This is what I had installed: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=17651&cat=283&page=2

His typical turn-around is about 6 weeks, I think. Mine took 4 weeks, but I specifically requested that I get it back before the weekend of April 15th (need this rifle for something this weekend). The job was $175 +$25 to ship it back.

I paid $518 for the rifle, $230 for the stock and $200 for the install. That's $948 total. Not too bad for such a nice semi AK-103 variant!

Sounds good. Enjoy your new toy !

Had you handled or shot anything with that type stock on it before, or is this your first time handling one?

I was curious because these newer units from Kvar have a different angle on the hinge/stock alignment.

Ive been anxious to find someone who can describe what this new design feels like compared to the original design that everyone has used up till now.

Cheers

Harv

A buddy of mine is coming back to town today. He owns an SLR-106. I'll have a chance to compare the stocks this weekend.

Looks great, SpetsnazGRU!

My 100-series stocks are still in the bags... Troy was definitely less accomodating when I asked him about doing a similar job for me a few months ago. Perhaps I should contact him again, see if the turn-around time has gotten more reasonable.

I contacted him at the end of February and told him that I would like him to do this job for me and explained that I would need the rifle back by the weekend of April 15th. If that couldn't be done, I said that would have to send the rifle in after that weekend. My best buddy came back on leave from overseas last week and we did some hiking with our AKs in full gear and survival camping in the mountains this past weekend. I needed my "go to" gun for that. Troy said that it's doable, as long as I stay in touch and send a note with my rifle. I did e-mail him and asked him how it was going a couple throughout the process and did get the rifle back a couple of days before last weekend.

By the way, my buddy and I swapped the stock Arsenal pseudo dual-stage triggers in my SGL and his SLR with Arsenal single stage triggers. Much better! Although, it turned out that the only difference between the two triggers groups is a 1 mm worth of material that can easily be filed off! At least, we now each have a spare trigger group. We though about going with Tapco G2, but liked the mil-spec look of the Arsenal triggers a bit better. Tapco G2s are a little bit crisper, with less travel, but these Arsenals single stage are rather good too.

By the way, the weapon functioned great. I did baby it a bit too much in the woods tho.

Yes. Easily filed off. You can take any trigger available and shape/polish it into a dream come true. The only difference is the hammer forged triggers are more

workable than the injection molded like the tapco, arsenal, and texas.

I recently polished out an Arsenal 2 stage trigger with that extra material bump into a 1 stage dream. If most people knew the difference, they would have to have ultra smooth polished

triggers. The only thing that might help even more is chroming the contact points once their hand polished smooth and then polishing the chrome which is slicker than steel.

Very nice. Troy has my Saiga 12 right now. He is cutting the barrel down to 12.5" and installing the folding trunnion, new trigger guard and welding up the unused holes, with a refinish. Can't wait to get it back.

KC913, is Troy going to provide/fabricate the different folding latch that the S-12 needs, or did you send him that rather than the standard rifle latch that comes with the stock "kits" from K-VAR?

I ask because several shops I've asked about this work mention that I'd need to locate and send them the shotgun-specific latch if I want them to do the install.

I sent him the proper latch parts. AK-Builder.com makes the proper Saiga 12 latch and it's pretty much identical to the factory parts. Pics and info on my SBS are in this thread:

Thanks for the tip on a source for the proper latch parts. AK-Builder is the only site I've ever used that ships faster than CSS. :D Like you, I prefer their trigger guard to those more commonly used on S-12s.

I've priced this work with a few other major shops, (biz members on this site), and Troy charges significantly less. I need to give him a call this week.. get the ball rolling on the stock-install projects I've been putting off.

AK Builder is only about 30 minutes from where I live. I need to just drive to his shop and pick up a couple more trigger guards and other parts. Nice guy, though. Answered all of my questions over the phone and tossed in the extra rivets for nothing.
