talaananthes 3
Hey all, So, I'm in the process of planning my Saiga conversion right now (first parts arrive tomorrow . . . among other things, an Arsenal 2-stage FCG and fixed NATO-length butt and a Hogue pistol grip), and right now I'm in the phase where I'm starting to think about sights. I'm pretty sure I want a TechSights group for the rear sight (I do a lot of shooting over iron sights at mediumish ranges, and need a longer sight radius and better rear sight), thinking about the combination of that and an ACE clamp on front sight to get the FSB off the barrel. So, a few questions: Does taking the FSB off the barrel actually seriously improve harmonics/accuracy enough to be worth the bother, especially considering that's going to sacrifice some of my hard-earned sight radius? Is the TechSights group the best rear-mount iron sight? How does it compare to, among other things, the weld-on HK style sights? And, slightly less related, I can see that my barrel is threaded under the shroud (actually tbh I got really lucky in that my gun is already ready for all military features . . . pistol grip and trigger holes already properly drilled, barrel already threaded, etc). I have a little bit of experience with pipe cutters, but how hard of a steel is that made of and exactly which tool should I buy to do the best job cutting it off? My hands are not steady enough to dremel it. And, how far back from the muzzle should I cut the shroud? What's the best amount to cut off to properly install barrel accessories? Thanks for the help everyone! PS--These retaining plates: http://www.saiga-ak.com/parts.html Seem to be a really good deal, but I've only seen them mentioned very rarely. Are they just new on the market, or is there a hidden downside I'm not seeing? Edited May 16, 2011 by talaananthes
stnls1911 55
I don't have any experience with the top part of your post, but FCG retaining plates are awesome. This is the one you're talking about, right?? http://dinzagarms.com/misc_parts/akretp.html
talaananthes 3
Hahahaha, no . . . look at the link. It's a bolt-on lower handguard retaining plate, US (home) made milled and looks like very high quality for half the price of similar quality options.
talaananthes 3
Oh and btw what are those retaining plates for? I have my new FCG in now but I haven't yet gotten to the stage of really learning how it works and goes together so I can change it in.
stnls1911 55
The FCG retaining plate replaces the shepherds crook. When you get your hammer, and trigger with disconnector installed, the plate slides into the rings of the axis pins. After that, you install your safety lever to hold it all in place. Squeeze your trigger to be able to push the safety lever down.
talaananthes 3
Yeah, ok. Wasn't planning to use one, the shepherd's crook works well enough doesn't it? Also, anyone know about the other things especially the sights?
lokmeup 30
The Techsights are good for the rear. For the front, I like the KNS Duplex Crosshair Reticle post sight. It works perfectly with the peephole sight on the Techsight to make an easy and intuitive sight/aiming picture. Midway has them in stock. The product number is 693844. talaananthes 3
That's a unidirectional sight, yes? Which means rear sight elevation adjustment is necessary which means I'd need to use the adjustable not the flip up rear sight?
lokmeup 30
I zero at 100y by screwing the KNS front sight post up/down, then flip up the rear techsight for 200y. No need to adjust again once zeroed. I did not by the adjustable rear TeachSight. It is not needed. Edited May 18, 2011 by lokmeup
leadslinger 37
i have the Krebs rear peep with the XS 24/7 front post. i just put a tech sight on my 10/22 all i can say is "sweet!!!". i was bummed that the tech sight for the AK didn't have a yardage graduation for quick bullet drop compensation. I am ashamed to say that i didn't even think that setting when you set the sight to 100 hundred then flip to bigger aperture you would have yardage graduation. then if you got the model that allowed rear elevation you could set and mark the 300 yard mark. this way with narrow aperture you would have 100, flip to bigger aperture quick 200 and then rotate dial to marked area 300 yardage marked. Now for you would loose battle sight setting but with the narrow aperture setting at 100 for anything closer you would just need to aim about and inch low. all i can say is "DOOOOOOOOH!!!!" Homer Simpson moment. Dam now its time to think about saving my pennies for tech rear sights for the saiga's any one want to buy 2 Krebs rear peep sights? LOL seriously i am going to have to think long and hard. i am pretty darn good with these sights and the Krebs rear is working well. 125 bucks per rifle. stuff that may (i say may as stranger things have happened) break leaving me with no sights. I do not treat my saigas with tender loving care. I want them to take a beating and still keep ticking. these may go on the back burner for one of those nice to have things. Still if i would have thought this out before i may have had them on my rifles and singing their praises. Oh well there is always tomorrow....but is there enough ammo?LOL Edited May 21, 2011 by leadslinger
talaananthes 3
lokmeup, what's your experience with the durability of the KNS crosshair front sight? I've heard mixed reports.
n102788 6
I have that lhg retainer and it is extremely high quality. I had a Chinese one I dremeled to work with my saiga, but the one in your link is light years better. I highly recommend that retainer.
lokmeup 30
lokmeup, what's your experience with the durability of the KNS crosshair front sight? I've heard mixed reports. Solid, but I don't go around throwing it in the dirt barrel first.. if you know what I mean.
