I know nothing about 10/22's but have a relatives broke down on my workbench. Is there anything that is a "must do" to improve reliability or accuracy while it's under the knife? There are boatloads of parts available, and cheaply.

A few cheap and easy upgrades are a sharp claw extractor ($9.99), auto bolt release ($8.99 or modify existing release yourself) and bolt buffer ($4.49). There are a ton of replacement parts for the 10/22. It all depends on what you're looking to improve. You can replace pretty much everything on it.

Clean everything well. That's about all you need to do to keep it accurate and reliable :]. If you're looking for aftermarket stuff, I'd suggest an auto bolt release, extended mag release, and possibly a recoil buffer. You can find all for around $10 each, and they're a breeze to install.

Is it a standard plinker or hunter, or is it a benchrest or target style rifle?

Jerk, KC beat me to it :P

This is and will be a very basic stock 10/22 from the 70's for plinking or dispatching the occasional pest. It may get a set of "tech sights". Other than that it's getting a new ejector (it broke), mag release, and an extractor if deemed necessary. There are many very knowledgeable people out there on the 10/22 so I just wanted to see if there was any tips, tricks or must have parts. Tks for replies.

i love my 10/22. midway has tons of parts in stock for them. as do lots of retailers. i usually go to them for my 10/22 stuff since they ship it fairly fast. i noticed that mine does not like the remington golden buttholes or the truncated cone type bullets. i had lots of issues with feeding. so i stick to the winchester and stingers. i wish hornady would make some 22lr. one thing i would improve first would be the trigger pull. at least on mine. its kinda gritty and a little long for a rimfire. at least to me. i want to get the valquartesen trigger assembly for it. i think its adjustable to like 1.5 pound pull. im sure this would help on mine for accuracy.

Yeah, check out midwayusa. They have all the factory parts, and some aftermarket stuff. I bought an extra extractor, ejector, and firing pin, so when my 10/22 has a hiccup 30 years down the road, I can replace the parts quickly :D. I looked into the tech sights too, but in the end just decided on mounting a red dot.

You might also look into purchasing a weaver scope base, if you don't already have one, and pick up a primary arms microdot. I love mine.

The SINGLE most effective mod you can do... for $30.00 is to install a "POWER CUSTOM" brand HAMMER...( you can get them at midway! ) for that thirty bucks, it will reduce the FACTORY trigger pull weight of about 6 and a half to 7 pounds down to a mere 2.5 pounds!!!!! I have done this mod in 5 ( FIVE ) Ruger 10/22's and on EVERY ONE... that was the weight on the trigger scale!!! It is an AWESOME, easy, fast, and CHEAP mod for a VERY nice trigger pull that will cut your group sizes significantly!!!

I'm glad someone started a thread on 10/22s. I just picked up my first on Thursday, a model 1168 Compact with a 16" barrell. Sweet little thing, I love it. It reminds me of a smaller version of my Mini 14. I also picked up a factory Ruger 25 round mag for it, which apparently hasn't been out that long even though the little 10/22s have been out for what, almost 50 years? Been looking at drum mags but haven't found one that reviews say is the bees knees. Pretty much all bad reviews on all drum mags for it. Since I just finished my S12 project, I will be doing some mods to this but not too much. Mostly it will be a plinker, and a bug out tool if SHTF for small game. I'm looking at scopes but I don't think you need anything too fancy for these really. Probably a Simmons for less than a hundred. Also need to figure out how to put sling mounts on it.

i was too. mine has a 22" barrel and is supposed to be a "limited edition". i love it. it basically is a small version of the mini 14. i love the simple operation of the weapon. im not going to do much to mine either. and for the scope, there is no need to do the shit i did and put something on like i have. im prolly going to put a redfield 2-7x33 on mine and put my leupold on my mossberg 30-30. as far as your sling goes, you have the wood stock just buy some basic sling studs and tap the stock for it and screw them in with some wood glue and you shoule be good to gou. for the taps, id use maybe a 1/8th inch drill bit or may slightly smaller. that way you dont split the wood and you can still get a solid stud mounted.

and for a SHTF rifle, these will actually be very effective. small game and even using them to warn off the unwanted, they should serve a great purpose as to letting someone or some group know they are not welcome.

sorry if the thread took a different direction than intended.

bye the way, that thing looks cool as hell. ^

I bought my first on Tuesday. Its the tactical with threaded barrel. Just picked up a cheesy $50 tasco scope. Hopefully it wont fall apart from 22 recoil

honestly i dont think it will.

what type of ammo are you guys using? i stick with winchester 333 and stinger. my rifle seems to love them.

I keep several thousand each of, Bulk Federal 550 & CCI Mini-Mag HP & RN

And several hundred CCI Shotshells.

I like the chromoly extractors and the extended mag release as my top picks for 1022 mods.

mine doesnt like certain remington loads. dont know if its just the bullet design, or just the mag tolerance. but truncated cone bullets and the remington golden bullets seem to jam mine almose ever 3rd round. and its always with feeding. but since i started sticking with the winchester and cci stingers/and or mini mags, i never had an issue. same with the federal target loads.

how does that extractor seem to perform? never got a chance to play with one. i do love the longer mag release.

+1

ruger has been doing wonders for the gun world latley. with the sr 556 to the new .308 scout. and the hole in the reciever for the cleaning rod is a great thing to consider. my buddy has a mini 30 and i think its awsome that they opened up to the x39 market. much like sig. when good companies compete, we end up the winners in the long run. i love it.

If ya think a 3-9 X 40 is overkill... what would you call a 10X-40X X 50 on my TNZ?!?!?

:smoke:

i would call it very rediculious! :smoke: j/k. sadly, i dont think your bullet would go from NY to kansas, although its fun to speculate.

:lolol: i thought mine was bad....sadly, where i live, i can barely get over a 100 yard shot. all my buddies make fun of me when i buts this thing out. i tell them they're just jealous.

Here is something somewhat useful from one of the survival sites I've been reading lately.

about the only thing i wouldnt worry about having on that list would be the larger bold handle. i do great with what comes standard. but the rest i can totally dig. and they do a good job of informing many of the "standard" mods one can make for these things. thanks for the info....

Figured i'd throw my 2 cents in on this... a must have is a higher capacity mag, and so far the only 1 I have found to work reliably is a 25 rounder from tactical inc. I was cheap and went with the plastic lipped one, and i got it adjusted right so the plastic lips still don't have a scratch and haven't had one failure with it yet. Or get a 3 way clip for attaching 3 factory mags to eachother, that is handy and helps keep track of your ammo better. I put a $15 ncstar 4x on it about 2 years ago, and have yet to break it or lose zero! Also ground down the orig. Bolt hold open... these are great guns and will last forever! And if you want an awesome range toy check out the ruger charger, mines awesome and everyone gets pissed when you can out shoot their scoped rifles with just a charger and a red dot! Hahaha have fun and good shooting guys

Here's mine to add to the gun porn. After trying various high cap mags throught the years, Ruger factory mags are still the best. Thank God they came out with the 25 rounder! (That's a shitty Eagle I think in the pic).
