Cut down barrel, add long brake

Recommended Posts

I live in Illinois and would like to cut down my barrel and add a comp brake to keep the legal OAL.. Do I need to get this done at a special shop who has the ability to cut down shotguns, or can any gunsmith do this for me? I assume I'd have to get the brake welded on so that it is permanently attached. Please let me know. The brake I'm looking at is the JTE comp brake.

If the barrel is cut below 18" to install the brake, you will need a gunsmith with a 2 SOT (NFA) license to do the work. There are several forum vendors with this licensing.

Good luck!

Thanks for the answers guys. Does anyone have a picture or 2 of a saiga12 with a shortened barrel and a brake adding up to the 18" OAL? I'd like to see some.

CBR - The question you posed is important enough to have all of the facts in hand before you proceed. There are always lots of opinions and answers offered on internet forums, but in general - forums are not a very reliable resource for specific legal advice. Especially when there is a potential felony involved if unsound advice is given/taken.

A great number of opinions have been offered, and this has so far been an excellent discussion. The "go to" authority for these types of questions is ATF NFA Branch. ATF employs specialists who are there to answer questions, dispel misunderstandings, and clarify apparent gray areas. The specialists I speak with are always knowledgeable, cordial, and extremely helpful.

I suggest that you call ATF directly at (304) 260-1500. Ask for an NFA specialist who can help you with questions regarding accepted practices involving shortening the barrels of rifles and shotguns for the purposes of flash hider an brake installation. I usually write down all the questions I want to ask in advance, because it is easy to let one slip away during the course of the conversation. The specialist will be able to provide solid reliable answers to your questions.

Best regards,

Mike Rogers

Mike Rogers of Lone Star Arms did the barrel work, (and most of the rest of it :D ).

His builds are second to none!

Do these big S12 breaks actually work?

I mean I figure they do something, but is the difference big or just noticeable?

Would you say that any of these reduce recoil by 20% or more?

from my expirience they're negligable with low velocity low base rounds. you'll see a difference in the heavier and higher velocity rounds.

It is a firm opinion and position of this forum’s ownership and management that any type of a modification of a shotgun resulting in an overall barrel length of that shotgun being of less then 18”, whether temporary or permanent, must be performed ONLY by a properly licensed FFL holders and according to ALL current BAFT rules and regulations and local state laws.

If you have any further questions regarding the current BATF rules and regulations please contact your local agency or ATF NFA Branch directly:
