staraero 0
I was using a different one for awhile and want to put the factory one on. Its the dimpled type, and was split on 1 side to remove it. It doesn't fit tight now and was planning on clamping it to the barrel and silver soldering it on. Would that work? JK-47 33
I have no idea, though it certainly sounds like the wrong way. I guess if solder does not block the gas port you might be ok. Then again, the gas block should be easily replaced by most AKM pattern gas blocks, that'd be my recommendation.
G O B 3,516
Not a god idea. Heating the barrel is never a good thing, and the factory uses pins for a reason: with pins field repairs are feasible, solder it and now you need a shop.
kresk 10,063
I've seen a scope rail silver soldered to the gas tube then the tube is soldered to the gas block and rear sight mount. It was done by a very experienced gunsmith.
msgw357 4
If it were a customer asking me to do it I wouldn't and would replace the block. I've seen it done on FSB but even then it was just as a temporary fix. Your going to have issues in as much as wear on the piston head where the block is not where it was originally I have seen this type of wear over several rounds with canted blocks. As the others mentioned the heats an issue. Most soft silver solders (ribs, etc.) melt around 400 degrees but the type you would want to use melts around 600. Depends on which you use but thats what your looking at. Your going to start seriously affecting the heat treating of the steel at around 550 to 650. Maybe lower depending on what the Saiga barrels made of or maybe even more but its not worth the risk. My advice is use a press and push a new, properly clearanced base on.
