NY guys help me out.

I'm located on Long Island. I purchased my saiga about a month ago and am looking to upgrade it. And I am having a little trouble understanding the crap NY laws. Going by the 922r compliance checklist on this site the saiga rifle comes with 14 foreign parts and i need to get that down to 10 foreign parts. I want to be able to use higher capacity mags since the 10 rounders get to be a pain at the range. I was trying to avoid moving the trigger forward and drilling into anything if at all possible, since i do not have the tools or space necessary to do so. I found a few "kits" online that come with a new stock and pistol grip that don't require drilling and simply bolts on, and it also counts as 2 compliant parts. Then I need to change 2 other foreign parts with US made parts for me to be 922r compliant.If i do that can i use higher capacity mags without an issue? my buddy has preban ak mags that can be modified to fit my saiga.I also saw online US made 20-30 round mags that are new. Can those be used after the rifle is 922r compliant? Am i missing something? or am I way out there wrong lol.. Thanks for the help in advance.. BTW the local shops including the one that sold me my saiga were pretty much useless in answering any of my questions.

Technically, you're not drilling into anything when doing a basic conversion, other than rivets on the bottom. The other drilling is only to remove the lips of the pins so you can pop them out. You're not drilling into the receiver itself or anything. The only tools required are a drill, a good drill bit, a punch (the right sized hex key works fine for this), screwdriver and a mallet. Having a dremel would make things easier, but I went through 2 conversion without one, so it's not absolutely necessary..........and I did all of this sitting on the floor of my apartment back up in NY.

The bolt-on kits will still leave you with the factory trigger linkage and therefore, less than favorable trigger pull. Just a heads up. Also, if it's one of those combined pistol grip/stock combos, it only counts as 1 part, when referring to Saigas. The pistol grip isn't replacing anything, since the Saiga didn't come with one, so it's not bringing your foreign parts count down by 2, it's only bringing it down by 1, which is the stock. So after using that setup, you'd still need to replace 3 other foreign 922r parts.

 

But to answer your question; yes, once you get your foreign parts count down to 10 or less, you can use whatever capacity mags you'd like, given they are pre-ban if they're over 10 rounds, since you're in NY.

Those mags aren't legal in NY. In NY, if you want to have a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds, it needs to be pre-ban.

I'd really suggest just doing the conversion. It's very easy, and the FCG parts you swap in give you 3 of the required 4 US made parts to bring your foreign parts count down.

After watching that video the conversion doesn't seem as complicated as i thought it was. For whatever reason i though it was a lot harder to do.I was trying to make something out of nothing.

I've only put about 250 rounds through it and have no problem with the trigger as it sits now. Before this i've only shot my friends AK a handful of times and my hi point 4595. So i guess its one of those things the more rounds i put through it the less i'll like it. And yes it was one of those grip/combo stock combos that didnt require moving the trigger forward. So pretty much do it right the first time.
