Need help with parts for New Saiga 5.45

Recommended Posts

A friend pretty much gave me a converted saiga 5.45. It is, however, missing some parts: bolt, bolt carrier and receiver cover. I talked to several gunsmiths and they all told me "any Russian, Bulgarian or E. German AK parts would fit, but you need to make sure that you got a correct headspace, all you need to do is someone to go through several bolts until they find one that fits.". The rifle is BRAND NEW never been shot. Everyone I called said "Oh, I don't have any bolts, but send the rifle to me and I will reset the barrel for $250". The entire rifle costs $300. Anyone knows is there a chance that a NEW bolt will not headspace correctly with a NEW rifle? Anyone knows a HONEST gunsmith/parts dealer who will HONESTLY select the correct bolt and sell it to me?

Thank you

You can buy a bolt, bolt carrier and top cover from K-Var that are made for the Saiga 5.45. You *shouldn't* have issues with headspacing, as these parts are made for that specific series and all machined the same, but you might check headspace just to be sure.

Edit to add: The total for the parts needed is $260 plus shipping. You can buy a brand new rifle for $289.00 right now from http://www.CarolinaShootersSupply.com. It might be worth just selling the incomplete rifle and putting the money towards a brand new one.

Uhh, the problem is that I didn't get a SAIGA 5.45, I got a VEPR 5.45... for free:-). I already know it takes SAIGA and any BULGARIAN or EAST GERMAN spare parts (bolt, bolt carrier and receiver cover), so all I needed is to find out headspacing. If you think this won't be an issue - then I am super happy. I do hope that this won't explode into my face. Besides, Bolt Carriers for 5.45 can be had on gunbroker for 49.95:-). Bolts however ARE expensive. And I will be getting a ribbed german receiver cover - looks nicer and is cheaper.

Pics of what? Of free Vepr? How can I prove it that my friend gave it to me? I still need SOME assurance that the normal new AK74 bolt will work, get me acceptable headspace and that this gun won't blow up in my face

I have a spare Bolt, bolt carrier, recoil assembly and top cover that id be willing to sell. They are from an unissued Bulgarian parts kit and are in excellent shape. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee your headspace. Make me an offer
