What kind of ammo are you guys shooting?

Recommended Posts

Howdy....

This has probably been asked already, but what are you guys shooting through your 7.62's? Sadly, after the 7.62 I bought a S20, then did the conversions and only had time to put like 20 rounds through the 7.62. The 20 rounds were Golden Tiger I got from a local gun show for $2/box of 20. I have have 100 rounds left over.

I've heard good and bad about Silver Bear. Mostly good about Wolf. Can you guys recommend something? I wanna start stocking up slowing instead of buying 100-200 rounds at a time.

Same question for the S20. For now I've put a box of Winchester AA. After another box or two, I'll probably use regular Winchester (it's pretty cheap at Walmart...IIRC 100 for $16).

Thanks.

Rogi,

I use Wolf but I recall reading that Dodge did some testing and found Barnaul to be more accurate or reliable. The problem is trying to find Barnaul in bulk. Wolf is easy to come by, is pretty accurate and priced right.

I have purchased Wolf from Sportsman Guide based on price and Cabellas based on price and the neat ammo boxes that come with each 500 rounds of 7.62.

Hope this helps.

Sportsman's is a bit cheaper, but those storage boxes sure come in handy.

what "bad" has been said about silver bear? (except for the minor things i posted on before) :haha:

the silver bear hp's i shoot are very accurate and fragment very nicely. and you don't have to worry about all those useless ass coatings fucking up your gun.

you can still find silver bear by the 500 rounds for $47.

one problem with silver bear is they offer a shit load of different calibers and loadings but you can't find anybody carrying them.

they have tons of x54r and 223 that you just can't find anywhere.

go to their site and look at their table of offerings.

they even list upc numbers but a search of the net revealed nothing.

yes to laquer..and i'm in texas

they only have fmj and its made by barnaul....blue looking box reminds me of the same box the shotgun shells have with the guy shooting the s12...but this one has a cowboy looking fella in a hat shooting a bolt gun on the front

damn! j&g has soft point silver bear!?

i thought they only made fmj and hp.

about the monarch ammo. thats all i used to shoot was the blue/white box with the guy shooting the bolt action rifle across a mountian. but i didn't know that it was called monarch. i only knew of barnaul.

Well. Because of this:

26095Saiga_-fired_cases_-2.JPG

The Russian "gun control" measure where they saw to it that the 7.62x39mm Saiga chamber marks the case with a extra swelled step.

...Nothing reloadable, like US boxer primed ammo, as it's a waste.

Non-corrosive berdan primed fodder would be the choice -alot is currently available, and adequate to the need.

For much the same reason, I'd not waste $ on HP & SP for plinking -choosing FMJ stuff. This also helps avoid feed problems.

By-the-way...

The engineered swell in the case is MORE likely to cause a CRACK at the mouth of the more brittle STEEL case than the more ductile BRASS case (this surprised me).

This is not extensive enough or regular enough to be a significant SAFETY issue, but -WEAR EYE PROTECTION!

It does lead to a observation that brass cased ammo would be a better choice, if available -I use both types.

I didn't see that "step" on the case from my Saiga. Guess I'll have to go shoot some more and get some cases to look at. ^_^  My SKS sure doesn't do that.

It'll be there -it's a little Saiga curse...the other weapons in this caliber will not do so, including the SKS, of course.

If you strip out the carrier/bot, and clean the chamber well, you should be able to see that the chamber is different -having this addtional cut to make the swell in the case.

I wish it was not there, but it is not a big thing -it would be if I reloaded for the Saiga.

I recovered some fired casings from my Saiga and there is no step in the brass (Steel, whatever). The case mouths are a little dented (Show me a semi-auto that DOESN'T do that), but other than that, there is no step in the brass. Mine was made in 2002 if that helps any. Did I luck out or is it you that has the odd Saiga? If I remember where I put my *$&!!$@ digital camera I will try to post some pics. Though I am going to be working out of town for the next week, so I may not be able to get on until next weekend.

Who knows?

This was a 7.62x39mm, right? The other calibers do NOT do this.

ive had good experiences with remington, but its expencive. its good stuf but i see no point in paying for brass when 7.62 isnt worth reloading.

then ive shot the whole zoo of cheap stuf, wolf, golden tiger, brown bear, silver bear ect. of those i prefer wolf FMJ and my new favorite is brown bear SP. the wolf is good faily accurate reliable ammo, but with the brown bear SP i can keep em under 2 inches at 100 yards with stock iron sights and a bipod. and i can get them localy for about 11 cents a round.

I just posted in another thread that I bought my Saiga 7.62.x39 last summer and aside from taking it out of the box and unwrapping it, nodding my head, wrapping it back up and putting it away I have never shot one round through it. I bought a crate of Wolf (20 boxes) at the same time and recently went to a local gun auction and bought an ammo can full of 7.62 x 39 on stripper clips (probably 500 hundred rounds) for $10.00, thats right, $10.00. I don't recall what kind it is, I think its foreign cause the casing is green. Anyway, I shoot wolf 9mm & .45 acp and not a lick of problems. I've shot the silver bear too but the Wolf is so darn cheap I usually buy it by the crate (20 boxes).

I would pay CLOSE Attention to the ammo on the stripper clips... might be CORROSIVE...

Keep your rifle CLEAN when shooting that stuff, till you can identify it as corrosive or NONcorrosive...

Nothing worse than shooting the rifle for the day, putting it up, planning on cleaning it later, then forgetting about it for a week to open the case and have a rusted up putrid mess inside the barrel and gas tube and action...

your eyes go  and the next thought is "HOLY SHIT!!! my POOR RIFLE!!! its RUINED!!!"

LOADS of cleaning can bring it back, but man, what a pain in the balls...

I shoot Barnul HP or FMJ through all my 7.62X39 guns. My SAR1 likes it the best. I bought a case of golden tiger from AIM and it doesnt do bad either.

I order all my Barnul from Dans Ammo.

Stay away from the surplus stuff, especially the Hungarian. I bought 1800 rounds from SOG only to find that over half (so far) are FTF and the ones that do go off are horribly inaccurate, not to mention its corrosive. With ammo around 9cents a round for commercial theres no reason to buy surplus in this caliber.
