Hello all,

I am a CA resident and am limited in what I can do to my rifle. I would like to swap out the butt stock that came on the gun for something that looks better and has a more solid feel. In my opinion, the butt stock that came on the rifle feels cheap. I don't want the hassle of installing a bullet button and putting on a pistol grip or collapsible stock. Therefore, my question is this: Are there after-market, conventional stocks out there for sale? I want something that looks cool and is also of better quality. I've looked around a little but no luck finding anything so far. Thanks!

Thanks for that reply. However, as far as I know, any pistol grip on a rifle like this one will not be compliant with state law unless a device such as a bullet button has been installed. Regardless, that is not what I am looking for. I am looking for an after-market, conventional style butt stock that is of better quality than the one from the factory and with a more tactical looking design. Thumbhole stocks are not an option either unfortunately. Any suggestions out there?

Do a restoration to pistol grip and use a solar tactical kydex paddle: Here is my Kalifornia compliant "featureless" build with pre-ban high cap.

Thanks for the input but, once again, I cannot have a pistol grip in CA with a detachable magazine. I would need to install a fixed, top-loaded magazine or a magazine lock such as a bullet button. Also it would appear that you have a flash suppressor or muzzle brake installed. That is also considered an "evil feature". Sigh, am I speaking English? What is that paddle for? Isn't that a holster?

Yea, well, unfortunately I'm employed here. I agree the gun laws make no sense and the budget crisis has no end in sight. Those things aside it's a great place to live (Northern CA). Wish we would split off and form our own state! Moving is currently not an option. Not to mention I don't think the wife will spring for a move based on my hobby. Anyway, does anyone have any real advice that pertains to the question I asked? It's surprising to me that I can't find what I'm looking for. Maybe I should make one...

best i can suggest to ya is....check some of the custom wood makers, i know your wanting something a bit more tacticle but no one i've ever seen makes a sporter stock for the saiga that didnt come with the saiga... except a few i've seen in wood.... now, if you were to take a wood stock, and coat it with rubberised bedliner... it would start to look pretty tacticle...

you are likely the only person in the world looking for a sporter stock that isnt a saiga factory stock....

Help me get a job elsewhere and I would get out asap. I work HVAC and the wife teaches 5th grade. Where the heck can we move to and still live above poverty level?

Dallas Texas baby... with 108 degree summers, HVAC is a frikkin GOLD MINE!

as far as 5th grade teacher goes.... do you have any idea how many small towns there are in Texas?... all have their own schools... they have to to support this much High School Football. Getting a teaching job at any of the area school districts should be.... near cake.

and I'll promise ya, you can live better on HALF as much money as you currently live on in SoCal, my best friend moved here from SoCal 5 years ago.... he STILL laughs about how cheep it is to live here compared to there. Sold his 3 bedroom 1 bath house, moved here and bought for the same money a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom brick on 12 acres with a large barn, workshop, stables, 3 ponds....

yea man... come on out... we got plenty of room for ya

I highly doubt I'm the only person looking. There are thousands of Californians that own this gun who are not looking to install a mag lock on their guns but want to make upgrades such as this. Thanks for the advice though. I'll keep looking.

I think you misread Rangemasters post! That pic is of a rifle he has in CA (I am here too)! That rifle complies with CA law. It is not by definition a pistol grip(ie you cannot wrap your thumb around the grip)! You can have free droping mags of 10+ rounds(assuming you owned them prior to the ban) in this configuration!

You may learn much about CA laws by joining calguns dot net.

That is good to know. I'm not sure I like the look of that though. It looks hard to handle and kind of ridiculous IMO. Just not for me.

Put a slidefire stock on it.

The bumpfire stock? I can do that without that stock. LoL. Don't need that either.

I live in Nor Cal too. The mag locks are a pain in the ass, but they aren't that bad. I definitely prefer my converted saiga with a mag lock, then when it was non-converted.

If you specifically want a sporting stock rather than PG config. that's a whole other story.

Where in nor Cal are you? If your in the Bay area I'd be happy to let you mess around with mine. I wouldn't go to war with a mag lock on, but you'll see that for plinking purposes the solar tactical lock with the little attachments on the end of your mags aren't that big of a deal.

Ok since the options you have been given are not up to what you want. The option I have found is Saiga stock dot com has original wood stocks that have been supplied on some imported rifles. Or you can make your own or have them made.

Just remember once you change the "as imported" configuration, you have to go with the 922r law for US made parts.

One more option is you can remove the end plate on the factory stock and fill it with expanding foam,ie great stuff, and it will have a more dense feel rather than hollow. Just an option!

thanks for the hospitality. Unfortunately my wife would never do texas. I have family in El Paso and Amarrillo and friends in east texas, but it's too dang hot. Good for the income, bad for the wife. I think I am stuck here.

Are thumb hole stocks leagal in california?

Yes, on a non semi-auto(ie bolt/pump rifle) or a rimfire without a maglock(ie bullet button)! You can put a thumbhole on a semi-auto centerfire if it has a maglock.

In other words you can have a thumbhole or pistol grip on a Remington 700 with out any restrictions!
