A paper plate at a hundred yards is dwarfed by the end of the standard front sight pin on a Saiga rifle. Not very precision for aiming at that distance.

I was considering turning down the stock pin just a bit, making it thinner/smaller. Any better ideas to improve the sight, besides getting a scope?

You should use better technique for better sight alignment. Your primary focus should be crystal clear on the front sight post, and use your built-in, automatic secondary vision to align that between the rear sight and the objective target. Funny Amazing how eyes work with a little training.

I have done that (turning down) the front sight on AK's for years. If that is what you want to try, go for it, I like to taper the front sight post from top to bottom, and often put a dot of paint (white, red, orange, whatever) to help, although you may not want to do that.

Front sight posts for the AK are cheap...go ahead and try it. Use your own judgement, and not anyone's else's as to what works best for you.

I have also used the conversion to install a AR style sight too, that is something else to ponder.

Do it the same way you reach out to 100 yards with a pistol. I was hitting 2" swinger steel plate with my buckmark 22lr over the weekend at 100 yards.

Instead of your normal sight picture, slightly elevate the front post above the rear notch, and hold under what you're shooting at. It will take awhile to get the hang of it, and exactly where to hold, but this is how to get it done.
