Factory vs. Surefire Magazines... what 3" shells work in what?

Recommended Posts

So I bought my wife a Saiga 410 for home defense and decided to do some enhancements. I've been doing an lot of reading on the forums and gathering as much information as I can so I can be relatively knowledgeable.

I'm going to go ahead and do the FCG conversion, pistol grip folding stock and profile and polish the bolt and carrier etc., etc.

So, I went ahead and ordered a Surefire 10 round magazine thinking that the factory 4 round magazine just didn't have the capacity necessary for a good home defense stand. The magazine says it's for 3" shells so I went ahead and ordered some Winchester 3" PDX1 (not cheap stuff) and some Fiocchi high velocity 3" #8 shells. So the magazine arrives and lo and behold right on the label it says it won't work with Winchester PDX1 ammunition nonono.gif and neither will the Fiocchi. I measured the shells and they are 2.75" , so now I'm wondering exactly what 3" shells actually work in the surefire magazines? Will I only be able to load some weak ass 3" birdshot loads for self-defense? Needless to say I'm a little bit disappointed because I have a magazine in one hand and ammunition in the other and neither one of them do me any good. Maybe I just needed to do some more reading, LOL. So now I'm wondering if the factory 10 round magazine will handle the PDX1 and Magnum loads (they do fit in the 4 round factory mags). Has anybody tried this ammunition in a factory 10 round mag? I'd hate to spring for one and be in the same situation that I am with the Surefire. I feel like returning the surefire and buying two factory magazines. More expensive but if I can use the self-defense ammunition that I bought it'll be worth it.

They'll probably work just fine. They are 3" after they have been fired. Go back through the forum, there are several very thorough entries about shell sizes and what works where. Illustrations too.

I saw the thread with the illustrations which was helpful but They won't even load in the Surefire magazine. They're just too darn long

Hmmm... PDX410 ammo works fine in my SMG 15 rounders.....

I'm editing my original post because maybe I miss spoke, I know I've fired pdx1 in my converted 410 but I may have only loaded 2 or three. I'll try my smg 5 rounder when I get home tonight (I sold my 15 rounders).

I think there are a couple of generation of the SGM mags in the 10 rounders. Anyway, the PDX 1's do not load up in my 10 round SGM mags but do load and work great in a factory 5 and 10 round mag. Some really great ammo that will work just fine in the SGM 10 rounders is Winchester 000 Buck, man this stuff really shoots great and delivers a hell of a punch. I think the 15 round SGM mags have more space forthe shells than the early version of the 10 rounders.

So the package says it won't work with PDX1? I ordered mine before 3" PDX1 was avalible and it just had which brands worked best. Like LENF said the topic has been covered pretty extensivly on here. The only shells I have had a problem loading in SMG mags are Federal 3" #4 BUCK handgun loads and Centurion 3" .400 Buckshot. The Centurion stuff is I had other problems with anyway so no big loss there.

Bigdaddyhatty, glad you cleared up the PDX's and 15 mag issue. I thought that the new 15 rounders would take the PDX's from some earlier posts i had read.

The factory 10 rounders work just fine with them, man that little gun really pack a punch loaded with them.

I think the Winchester 000 Buck does just about as well in the SGM mags. Unfortunatly neither ammo is real cheap. I think reloading is the answer.

For what it's worth. It might be a good idea, (although a bit involved) to generate a spreadsheet of what will work in what magazines as a reference guide. I know quite a bit of it has been covered in different places here on the forum. Forgive my ignorance but, are there any magazines that will will work for the 2 1/2 inch.410 shotshells?

Confirmed what everyone else is saying. 3" PDX1 fits in the factor mag fine but not in the SGM 15 rounder. Since it is nominally longer than even the 3" Golden Bear, it's possible that 2.5" PDX1 might work in the Surefire. Has anyone actually tested this?

From SGM Tactical:

We've never grind down our magazines before Sir. Please send me a photo of the problems your having with the magazine. I'm sure I can help you out. Here is a list of shells I know that they work well in the magazine.I'm happy to help any way I can Sir.

Saiga 410 Rounds
The measurements are based of the shell length after the shell’s crimping has been shot outward.  So a 3” shell will measure 3” with the crimping pushed out.
The recommend length of 2.7” is before the shell has been fired. 2.5” shells will fit in the magazine just fine. The problem is the Saiga 410. They don’t like low brass shells because of the low gas pressures.
Here is a list of shells we’ve found that work well with the SGM Tactical Magazines
  1. Federal 410 3” Steel Game And Target Loads (FRS4136)
  2. Federal 410 3” High Brass Loads #6 Shot  (H4136)
  3. Remington 410 3” Express Long Range (SP41375)
  4. Winchester Super-X 410 Bore 3” 000-Buck 76mm (XB413)
  5. T-14 ammo 410
  6. Federal high brass,
  7. Remington Game loads (black shell, 20 per box),
  8. Remington Nitro (gold),
  9. Winchester Super SPEED
    (Of these, Federal works best.)
  10. Winchester Super X Rifled Slugs (X41RS5)
  11. Federal # 6, Estate #8
  12. Remington #4 Long Range, #6 Long Range, #6 Field and 1/5 oz Slugs
Note:
Winchester Super SPORT will fit and run but they are a tight fit and some fail to load and get stuck in the magazine. No Winchester 2.5” ammo will fit, nor will Remington #9.
