Muzzle brake poll

Recommended Posts

....OK, so it's not really a poll  but I would like to get some of the conventional wisdom as to what brakes you prefer & how they are being attached.....I know it's been covered in other threads but I'm lazy ...

.....I'm more interested in a good performing brake as opposed to one intended mostly to impress the people at the range  ...........

...Does anyone use the slant muzzle brake & how does it do for recoil control?..

Also, does anyone happen to have a muzzle threading kit that they would care to rent out??.........................

A member (WJM I think) rents out a thread kit. I used it to do 2 of mine. I have a slant brake on one, a birdcage on the other. Neither seem to do much in the way of reducing recoil. I sometimes shoot at night and the birdcage is pretty effective for reducing flash from the shooters perspective.

the best brake ive used is on my m15a2 that i traded for a few years ago. an AR has little recoil as it is, but this brake on mine makes it have almost ZERO recoil. there are pictures of it in my photo gallery if you want to look at it. per NY state law, it is threaded on, and pinned in place permanently. guys I shoot with let thier 5 year old sons shoot it. even the kids that are scared to fire it are quite surprised to find it has the kick of a 22mag. quite the fear breaker if you ask me.

the slant brake is really just to REDUCE muzzle climb on a FA ak. its not going to be very noticeable on semi auto, i dont think, and its really not there to reduce recoil, but to reduce muzzle climb.

ive been toying around with the idea of having a machinist I know make some custom brakes that look like they are slanted, but are more like my AR's brake. i figure with the air CNC machine he has access to, it would make me a dozen in about two minutes. I could use something on my sar that I do most of my dynamic shooting with. right now i have to muscle the thing onto targets. would be nice to not have to work so hard to shoot how I do.

I used an AA-OK 'tank cannon' style brake on my S-.308 and it worked GREAT! The reduction in recoil was so large the it destroyed Rick's excellent adapter. The reduction in recoil was large enough to make the .308 feel like my X-39 SKS.

.....True, the Saiga's recoil is pretty underwhelming but I'm trying to cooerce the woman in the family to give it a try & can use all the help that I can get....

Bvamp: Yes, I second the thought of making some brakes made that actually function as well as look good!...Perhaps they could be constructed to fit over the stock barrel with the collar removed & spot welded on......

BTW: Who's MiG 15 is that??................

Bro, I got an AK74 style brake on my 7.62x39, it is a 2 part brake

the adapter and the brake, the adapter was silver solder to the

sleeve of the saigas FSB and the brake just screws into it

and unscrews for easy cleaning, I try the gun with the brake and

with out the brake and it really lesser recoil and muzzle climb

especially on rapid fire, you still have some recoil, but not as much.

I think a brake with two large openings, like gob uses will be a good deal too,

if you let me look around I can find a page in the internet, were some one

experimented making muzzle brakes and I will post it.

I am using Vijors idea I have a Russian copy brake from ak-usa. I am drilling out the Saiga stock fsb for a retainer pin and spring. I will silver solder the adaptor on the fsb and post images of it when Im done in my album.

I read that one that someone posted about a year or so ago, It was some guy who tryed out all different kinds of brakes and found the tank cannon style to be most effective.

I got one on Egay pretty cheap that was for an AK47. I welded it to the barrel sleeve.

It works fine, not much different, mabey a little less jump and a little more accuracy, but that could just be the shooters perception. I dunno, It looks cool.

oldwheat: even though I like to tell people that I bought it, that mig15 is one of the ones that was flown to an american base during the cold war for a large reward. the markings are original. it is housed at the PIMA air and space museum in tucson arizona. and yes, you can walk up to and climb on and touch all the museum pieces there. i posted 40+ pics in a photo gallery if you want to see more.

.....I'm still mulling over the muzzle-brake thing.....If it's just eye-candy, I won't bother but if there is some improvement to be had, that's another matter.....

Bvamp: I thought that the MiG might be privately owned example; there are a few around, Yak 3s also..None in my hanger though, all I own is a Mitsubishi  ....

like i said about the brakes....the one on my ar works great. ive shot my lower with someone else's bushmaster upper with one of those "cool muzzles" on it, and it kicked a little bit. the one I have on mine actually works.

ive seen some of the privately held migs and yaks at airshows in my area. like i said, the one in my avatar is one of the ones that were flown to the free world by a disgruntled communist for a reward from the govt.

Bro if you want really something that works, look and the tank canon muzzle brake

from JP, is ugly looks like hell on any small rifle but it works.

If I have the mula for one, well you gues I will have one.

ok, update. just so you know, my AR is the choice high powered rifle friend sintroduce thier children to. i called to make sure monday is a go with shooting, and the friend that is storing my guns while im away told me his 4 year old son shot several groups with my ar. this is the 6th or 7th child under ten that has fired my ar (always upon request of thier dad and under thier supervision). that should be proof in itself of the brake's function. granted, the gun dont kick much in the first place, but the brake I have works wonders.

I will be sure to post pics of the next toddler that shoots it for you all to see. I have to get the look on the kid's face the next time. it is classic. I am honored to give these dads the opportunity to expose thier children to this part of the american life. in fact, i encourage it.
