cbang 0
I was on a other forum and basically the consensus is. The vepr even in ,7.62 * 39, is better than the saiga. So, besides the issue of converting a saiga. What are the pluses and minuses of either one?

So, besides the issue of converting a saiga. What are the pluses and minuses of either one? The VEPRs will be higher quality, but that doesn't mean they are always desirable over a Saiga. There are much fewer furniture options, and the extra weight is not really helpful for most applications (and thus is a hindrance).
atakacorp 147
Vepr, better quality, heavy barrel, but I would look at 7.62X54R
jimdigriz 580
Vepr, better quality, heavy barrel, but I would look at 7.62X54R Single stack magazine, small capacity.
G O B 3,516
Veprs are overpriced IMHO. Nicer - but not THAT much nicer.
armory 142
For the money, the Zastava PAP is a great deal, if I was going single stack AK. Just my opinion. Edited March 5, 2012 by armory
datrowl 111
Vepr has the heavy reciever and barrel, its built like a tank and for that one reason alone I think they make a build specific damn fine 47.... what I mean is... IF i were to build another AK atm, with the avalibility of the Veprs now, I'd build a dedicated Bumpski/slidefire rifle.... the 7.62x39s can be converted easily to take the high caps... with its beefier build its suited almost perfectly for this application.... but... thats just me
Mullet Man 2,114
KVAR has Saiga M's on their site now. Thicker receiver and heavy barreled models of Saiga! A good bit less then VEPR's too.

Mullet Man 2,114
Right on the front page. 7.62x39 http://www.k-var.com...&cat=433&page=1 .223 http://www.k-var.com...&cat=432&page=1 Theres a .308 with wood too but it doesnt say if its an "M". Doesnt look like theres a 5.45 M. Edit; I guess pricing isnt that much different then a Vepr at $30-$60. But no slant cut receiver on a Saiga! sniper7 3
Saigas are great guns but the VEPR out of the box is of much better quality. both will work fine, but you can tell a difference. It is like buying a chevy tahoe vs a cadillac escalade. you can tell there are nice upgrades but if you saw them from afar they look essentially the same.
MindRiot 83
Here are some of the features the Vepr have that Saiga's do not: Hammer forged chrome lined Heavy barrel (18mm) with a 50,000 round factory warranty A milled/machined RPK front trunion 1.5mm thick receiver Turkish walnut furniture Milled/Machined bolts NOT CAST (also the large calibers have 3 locking lugs instead of 2 ie 308's). You can convert the Veprs (922r) with a receiver insert and the best part is you do not have to move the trigger group forward and the pistol grip hole is already in place. Overall the Vepr is a much better built rifle with attention to detail that the Saiga does not have.
cbang 0
I'm sold. I'm just waiting on the regular one with a threaded barrel and no slant cut receiver. So, hurry up with those.please.

Saiga .308 rifles do indeed have 1.5mm receivers, heavy front trunnions, and 3 lugs on the bolt, correct your spiel there. Calibers under .308 do not need heavy barrels, receivers, or overbuilt trunnions. In 7.62 or 5.45x39, I think an Arsenal SGL21 or 31, (Legion Saiga), is a better choice than a VEPR, and they're just as well built.
