Saiga .308 Conversion question

I have not seen one done like this so I'm asking, can my Saiga .308 16" be converted to a original looking AK with upper and lower handguards, cleaning rod?

 

If so, recommend a smith.

Anything you can dream up can be done on these rifles. I trick is you just need to figure out how to do it. I dont belive there are any retainers made to fit the diameter of the 308 barrel. So you would have to take a standard retainer and make it fit. I put standard forgrips on my x39 but that was easy just split it down the middle and slipped it on. For the 308 you would have to enllarge the hole diameter before splittling it.

Thats the way I want my handguards done, but I would not attempt to do it myself, I don't want to screw it up.

Cobra put AK handguards on his .410, so a .308 shouldn't be a big deal. find one of his posts- theres a pic of it in his sig line.

Actually... Cobras signature line image is NOT A .410.... but his 12 gauge...

 

He put the handguards on a 12 gauge!!

Thanks for the pics SR-47, what lower handguard retainer did you use that will fit the larger diameter of the 308 barrel?

According to what he said on that post the retainer is custom made.

"Custom built one off forward handguard clamp so a regular AK forward handguard could be used instead of the funky Saiga one"

I think RPK retainers fit our guns. If you want a standard AK retainer though, you need to cut out the old area where the barrel goes through it and braze/weld in a pipe of suitable diameter for our barrels. Someone had already done that on this board and posted pics somewhere. Rick has also done such conversion if you want to ask him.
