Red Star 38
Well, here she is. Was really simple, I was nervous as hell though. It all went smooth, except for the bullet guide... I broke the bloody tap so, i broke it off level, and JB welded the bullet guide on. The howls of disdain are sure to follow, but I had already thought of doing it this way and have researched JB weld quite a lot. Anyways. There she is
Mullet Man 2,114
I broke the bloody tap so, i broke it off level, and JB welded the bullet guide on. The howls of disdain are sure to follow, Fuck'em! If it works, it works. Its your rifle, not theirs. Looks good!
Red Star 38
thanks sir The last thing to do is duracoat, but thats after an extensive 'shoot the crap out of it to make sure i did it right' period.
joshman 4
I too had to jb weld my bullet guide in as well. Good job, looks great!!
Red Star 38
how is yours holding up? how many round thru it do you think you have? I am interested to find out how many other people used JB weld on the BG... I just tested that it cycled and fed, and it does! am a happy camper.
G O B 3,516
It's just a matter of time.....
Red Star 38
GOB, do you have any numbers to say how long it should last?
thebuns1 4,323
it does look good. its hard to say how long it will take before it works loose. depends on how much you shoot it.
Red Star 38
yeah, thats what i was thinkin too... I know there are folks that have JB'd their bullet guides, but to get them to say how long they last is nigh on impossible. the most i've seen said was 2000 rounds and still going strong... I will definatley keep everyone posted as to how it goes.
thebuns1 4,323
please do and keep a tally on how many rounds you put through it so it will give others an idea on how long to expect it to hold up.
Red Star 38
for sure! I will be the well documented guinea pig this way we can have at least some proof of how long it lasts for.
pazoozoo 0
Very nice. As someone who is just about to do my first, I hope mine looks as good and goes as smoothly, without the broken tap of course
Red Star 38
thank you sir! It really isnt that complicated... be really, really careful with the tap though. It doesnt take much force at all to break. I used the videos from CSS to walk me through it, they are great One other thing, I have the polish beryl folding stock, the screws that hold the original buttstock in place will not fit the beryl. I had to use machine screws, i think 10 32's half inch. Another tip... put the trigger guard on first. its a pain in the ass to do once you have everything else done. Same thing with the pistol grip. If i had to do it again, I would have put the trigger guard on first, then the pistol grip, then all the rest. I also did not have to modify the bolt hold open lever at all, as well as the safety. good luck with your build sir, and be sure to post pics once it is done
frontier737 0
When I did my conversion I followed a series of videos from utube which were a great guide except for the bullet guide install. In the video he used an electric drill to run the tap. IMHO I wanted to do it different. Instead of 6-32 or 8-32 screw I went with a 10-32. After drilling the proper hole I ran the tap by hand using plenty of oil. I started to tap and after about 2 turns I unscrewed it and cleaned it. I continued till I was at the correct depth. The main thing is SLOW and plenty of oil.
Red Star 38
I thought i was being slow, and the amount of oil i used could have been proven environmentally unsafe... Anyways. Here she is as of this morning... S.A.N.D.F. brown AK 74 as soon as the light outside gets better, I will post some more pics
Red Star 38
as promised, a pic of her in better light...
gunfun 3,931
It looked better to me in black, but you've made it your own and made it match your area. I like the stock you have chosen. Where did you get that one?
Red Star 38
Thanks sir. I was planning the brown for a long time. The black is awesome, but like you said, now its MINE... The stock is a polish beryl folder, I think I got it from jtg sales.
Red Star 38
Ok, here is where i got the stock: http://www.robertrtg.com/ak.html
jamesavery22 54
I like the stock. How's the lock up and how much play is in the stock when it isn't latched?
Red Star 38
The lock up is rock solid. I tried to see how much play there was, but there is none. When it isnt latched, and folded to the side, there is quite a bit of tension keeping it folded, and even then there is hardly any play. another nice thing about the beryl folder stock is you dont need to cut the tangs off. it fits right in. the OEM buttstock screws dont work though, their thread is far to wide. I had to use regular machine screws, i thin 10/32's half inch and cut the rear screw down to fit. Red loctite, and all is well.

Red Star 38
I actually didnt have to switch out the FSB. I got the new saiga model that has the front end conversion done at the factory. I think its the IZ 340.
