Which brake is the best at reducing muzzle climb for follow up shots, the ak-74 brake or FSC47?

 

I have a factory threaded barrel. I have cut away the barrel shroud to use an FSC47, but I want to replace the gas block and fsb, and so far it looks like my only option for a fsb is an ak-74 type with 24mm thread. I could cut off the front of the fsb for a more traditional akm fsb and use the FSC47, but it seems like a waste. I could use the 24mm threads with an ak-74 brake (sized for 7.62) but that seems like a waste of the factory threads. I have all the parts so the cost isn't a factor, just want to know which brake is best for follow-up shots?

dunno about BEST for FOLLOW up shots... but I have a 24MM brake on my WASR... other than it looking cooler than the standard threaded brakes of a similar design I have on several other X39 Saiga conversions... I do not notice much, if ANY, noticeable difference in muzzle climb reduction.

 

In fact, as its hollow, and the others are more solid... and heavier... I might even think the heavier ones might do a better job... During a bumpfire, 30 rd.mag dump neither one is much different than the other... both have similar climb...

 

Shrug... sorry... I know its not really a stupendous answer... LOL

I'm just wondering about follow up shots because recoil isn't an issue for an AK-47, but compared to the 5.56 and 5.45, there is a bit more muzzle climb that makes aimed follow up shots a little slower. The FSC-47 seems to have more felt recoil by directing some of the muzzle blast backwards to help combat muzzle climb. Just wondering if the AK-74 muzzle brake is comparable.

I have never shot through an fsc47. But my ak74 zig zag does exactly what you say. Redirects more recoil straight back. But muzzle rise is almost eliminated.

 

That's good to hear, I'd prefer not to cut the threads off the AK-74 fsb.

 

Just use the ak74 threads. People(like me) go through a lot of work to get those FSBs on their rifles. Don't just hack yours up. You'll be more than happy with a bulgy surplus ak74 brake.

 

FYI I bored mine out a little to avoid bullet strikes but I hear it isn't neccesarry.

I probably will bore out the ak74 brake, I've seen pictures of brakes that seemed to have clearance for the .30 cal round but had bullet strikes in the end. Could possibly a bigger bore make the brake less effective since it was originally intended for the 5.45 round? or is there no loss of functionality.

I doubt it would be any less functional. The big factors are larger opening and the holes in the top of the block to reduce climb
