AK-12

Made by Russian company, Izhmash the AK-12 is basically a modern-day AK-47 with features added that not only the Russian military requested, but civilians alike expect on a good rifle. Izhmash has added Picatinny rails, an adjustable stock, a rear sight and ambidextrous controls to this fifith generation AK-47. Gas-operated, the AK-12 may look like an AK-47, but Izhmash actually completely redesigned the old favorite. The military model will be available in 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm, and 5.56x45mm. All AK-47 magazines will work in the AK-12 and a quad-stack 60 rounder is in the works. What’s better is that The Firearms Blog reports a semi-automatic civilian version of the AK-12, chambered in either .223 Remington or 12 gauge, will be ready in 2013.

With the old Izhmash general director being arrested and new one being named in late December 2012, and Izhmash being folded into "Kalashnikov" holding company, there are bound to be disruptions in the supply process. The news I've been reading says nothing about stopping the production of the civilian weapons. In fact, Izhmash is discussing having part of it's orders being built at Tula due to "high demand for sporting/hunting guns".

Another article says that Izhevsk doesn't have enough trained machinists to manage it's current production tempo.

http://english.ruvr.ru/2013_01_21/Demand-for-Russian-guns-grows-in-America/

The exports of Russia’s Izhmash enterprise to the U.S. increased by 15% in 2012 compared the previous year. The company has significantly improved the quality of its products, different types of sporting and hunting guns, and at present, it intends to strengthen its position on the American market.

At the exhibition in Las Vegas, Izhmash presented several models of hunting self-loading Saiga carbines that use different types of ammunition, Saiga-12 for law enforcement agencies in classical form and with additional detachable equipment as well as shotguns “Bars”, “Sobol” and “Korshun”. At present, Izhmash is developing two small-bore rifles for the U.S. on the basis of SM-2 and “biathlon” sport guns. These guns will be displayed at the next exhibition in 2014.

The U.S. is an important market for the Russian enterprise. It imports over 80% of Izhmash’s civil firearms produced for export, says Elena Filatova.

“Concerning our interest in the American market, the U.S. is the world’s largest market in sporting and hunting guns. Consequently, we intend to strengthen our position on the market,” Elena Filatova added.

Excellent!

Hopefully the Tula produced guns are of at least "normal" quality.

Izhmash declares bankruptcy?

To close the controversy of "bankruptcy"...

There are several variations of bankruptcies here, in the United States; therefore, often "bankruptcy" means "reorganization", and not necessarily "closure".

I believe, this is how most of the concerned Forum Members took it, concerning more about the effects of restructuring on product exports.

Izhmash formally completed its "bankruptcy", evolving as a part of "Kalashnikov" conglomerate.
