Finally picked up one of the must-have guns; a Ruger 10/22. Its the all-weather model with the synthetic stock and stainless barrel. So, the next step after ordering some of BX-25 magazines, what are some of the nearly essential upgrades to add to the rifle (or essential DIY mods? I know some aren't fans of the barrel bands)?

mine doesnt have any barrel bands, but has a 22" barrel and is stainless on wood. first thing i did was get a scope. im thinking of picking up a timey trigger. i havent done much to mine as its always done what ive asked too, but would like to see what kind of accuracy i could squeeze out of it.

Nothing else is really essential. Just find a brand of ammo yours likes.

A butler creek magazine loader is great though.

I do love the power custom trigger kit.

If you have ejection issues, realize that inertia ejects the shell when firing, and replacing the extractor will not fix that. A new extractor only effects hand cycling. Very common misconception of the operating principles that sells a lot of parts.

If you have an older one, an extended release is a huge improvement. you can accomplish that by drilling into the old button and tapping in a bolt.

Best thing for a 10/22 is to shoot the crap out of it. The more they shoot the smoother they seem to get.

As far as a barrel, Tactical Solutions has an awesome aluminum barrel with a steel liner for the barrel. I was skeptical at first when my buddy got one for his. But you can take out golf balls at 125 yards! Really cool hitting little stuuf like that. I got a quarter with his decked out 10/22 at 100 yards. Then I showed him up with a dime with my .17hmr

Do the mag release mod yourself, takes two minutes with a Dremel or five with a rat file.

The extended mag release is nice.

And definitely do a new trigger.

Those are the big three.

After that, barrel, stock & sights.

What you NEED? Nothing. Just enjoy your new fine rifle. But...But...But..If you want to....Start with a Choate folding stock, then section about 4 inches out of the forearm just behind the barrel band, then reattach the front end with pins and Gorilla Glue, then rebed the barrel bed....

Then...get a BATFE tax stamp and after you receive it, get a Green Mountain 8" 1X9 twist blue threaded barrel, then get another BATFE tax stamp, then get an Elite Iron Echo 2 6" suppressor, then a Vorquarsten (sp) trigger group, a nylon bolt stop. a automatic release bolt stop...

An over sized AK type mag release lever...about a 5X times stronger magazine retention spring, a Ti-tan-ium (sp) firing pin, a custom made (by me) 4430 extractor, a 3X strength extractor spring, several recoil springs of different strenths, drill and tap two more holes in the top...

Of the receiver soss the heavy Russian nite vision scope will mount with any flex (glitch here?)

using the Ruger provided top rail. Then try different sub-sonic .22 ammo. I use Aquila SSS 60 gr. round nose lead sub sonic ammo hollow pointed back (by me) to about 56 grains. All BATFE rules apply. HB of CJ (old coot) :) :) :)

I just put a leapers red dot on mine, I didn't care too much for the stock sights.

I did a few DIY mods too, polished the contacting areas of the trigger, polished the bottom of the bolt (just for the heck of it), modified the bolt hold open so it works like a saiga's, modified the extractor a little, and put a VERY slight chamfer on the bottom of the chamber (alot of my rounds were hitting the there and putting large gashes in the bullet)

WHAT YOU NEED....

Power Custom hammer. midwayusa. This 30 dollar part will transform the 7 pound factory trigger to a nice, crisp, 2.5 pound trigger. It will essentially cut your group sizes in half if not better than that!!!! It is a 5 minute installation and does nothing permanent to the rifle. you simply swap out the factory hammer for this one. Easy. done.

I've always liked my 10/22 jus' fine bone stock:

She's about 16 yrs old now.

I'd probably get some more custom accessories for her if the larger caliber firearms, (especially my Saigas), didn't eat up so much of my $ and time.

I really should get some of them new fangled BX-25 rnd mags, take her out and shoot her more. She has been a bit neglected in that regard.

auto-bolt release mod, i did my own trigger 2.5 lbs. measured, extended mag release of some sort,i added a rubber buttpad for more L.O.P. ,scope if you wish. then buy as many bricks of cci made blazers ( not federal made blazers)as you can and get good with it. ive been shooting the pizz out of mine lately, its fun. very accurate which is contrary to what ive read before i bought one...........

i have under $300 in mine total and its good to go..................very happy with it

Here is my little 10/22 I built recently.

Interesting setup. I had a wild hair to put a micro dot on CZ-452 Scout or some such. With a 2-3MOA dot, I figured it could be a handy little squirrel plonker. How does it work with a target stock like that?

I like the bolt release how it is. No need to mod it at all, but for as simple a modification as it is, you really should do your own with a file.

The butler creek folding stock for those is great. too.

Yeah I built this 10/22 for my son when he gets old enough, hes only 4 months right now lol. The red dot on that thing is a Aimpoint T1 micro replica and is great for the $30 cost. Point and shoot and turm the brightness down and you can get very accurate!

The first mod I did to my Charger was a Timney trigger. It is amazing plus it has the magazine release lever built in. You could easily spend a lot of money on upgrades but as others have already stated, shoot the crap out of it, then decide what you really need.

Take a look at Hornet triggers as well. They are about a $100 less than the Timneys and are excellent triggers. I have one on my target 10/22 build and love it. No creep, takeup and a crisp 2.5 lb pull. The model I have includes the bolt release modification. All you have to do is pull the bolt handle back and release. They will even buy back your old trigger assembly for $30. IMHO the trigger is the best bang for the buck in upgrading the 10/22.

Just picked up the stainless also. Considering the cleaning rod hole in the rear of the receiver. Mine loves Stingers after trying about ten different brands of ammo.

Still adapting to the sight alighment style Ruger uses on the iron sights.

Scope will be the next add-on.

Thanks for the input fellas. You guys have some absolutely beautiful rifles. Looks like I'll be picking up a set of the tech sights, and then I think I'll try to stick one of those primary arms micros in front of it on another small rail section and see if I can manage around a 1/3 cowitness. After that, I've got my eye set on one of those Butler Creek folding stocks. Once those are all on board, I'll start looking into doing some more of the finer tuning of the action. I wonder if Pauly would be open to polishing up some 10/22 bolts?

I've got the tactical model, the ATI folding colapsable stock a BSA 12x40 scope, and a promag bi-pod. I did the auto bolt release mod, my own trigger job to get it down to about 3lbs. She goups at about .50" at 50 yrds..at 100 it's a different story..ofcourse all I've used is the cheap federal 555 bulk pack.
