Hi everyone. I picked up a Saiga 7.62x39 the other day. It's my first rifle and I'm looking forward to taking it to the range and checling it out. I've been going back through this forum to read up on it. I don't plan on doing any modifiications other than adding a scope which leads me to my question. Can someone confirm to me that the rifle comes with a side optical mounting rail? It appears that mine does but the manual that I recieved doesn't mention it.

Also I would appreciate suggestions on must read forums or web sites. Like I said above this is my first rifle. I have a 9mm handgun but I wanted a rifle in case any SHTF moments should occur. So I started doing some research and was going to get either a SKS, Saiga or a Ruger Mini. I went into a gun store near where I work and there it was on the rack for $240.00.

So any comments/suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance!!

Personally, I would spend some quality time with it shooting with iron sights just to get used to the weapon. Espiecally if this is your first rifle. One of the fun things about guns is that not all weapons will shoot the same.

When I get a new rifle I like to set up a 10-ring target at about 25 yrds and try to shoot from either a bench rest or prone rest. Remember that not all ammo will shoot the same depending upon projectile weight and type, powder dram and type etc.

After I get the sights where I want them, then I move the target out to the range that I think I'll probably do the most shooting/killing/plinking. I like my SKS at about 100 yards.

Read this forum concerning scopes. I was thinking about scoping my S-12 but decided against it for now. If I was seriously going to scope my SKS then this forum is where I would come, probably leaning towards a Kobra...

Enjoy your new weapon. Hope this helps.

Yes, I believe all of the Saiga 7.62x39 came with the optical rail. I have never seen one without one. You will need the detachable mounting bracket for your scope. Any standard AK-47 detachable mounting bracket will fit. You can find them all over the internet, in catalogs at gun shows and at gun shops. They usually need to be adjusted a little tighter where they lock onto the rail, but if you look at it on the bottom, you can see how to make the adjustment.

Welcome to the forum!

Your gonna love your new rifle!

You are lucky to get a Saiga now that they're not being imported. After you get familiar with the Saiga you can think of other options such as conversions or just leave it stock. The Saiga is a very dependable rifle.

I added a peep sight to mine and will convert the rifle at some future date. The scope rail is handy but you must make sure the scope locks in place otherwise it will slide off at the range as mine did, I was lucky to catch it and later I learned that it has a detent to lock it in place.

In the meantime enjoy your new toy and learn how to use it effectively.

AIM Surplus has Yugo SKS rifles for $79 on special if you want another companion rifle which uses the same 7.62x39 round. The Saiga has more potential since you can convert it, the Yugo SKS is a good shooter only, you can't convert it without losing the C&R status.
