Hello everyone, This weekend I am headed to some property in the country with some friends for a day of target practice that will inevitably turn into just plain good old (responsible) shooting. We will be shooting a wide variety of things from .22 pistol, 1911, Desert Eagle .50AE, AK, AR, and S-12 to name a few. I was going to bring some water filled milk jugs or buy a box of biodegradable skeet to throw or set on some 2x4s but then started wondering if anyone had any creative suggestions for fun targets and reliable target setups\stands? Plus I can only drink so much milk in the next few days.

At this time I do have a few ground rules I want to follow: I have to be able to transport it to and from the property in a SUV, I have to be able to clean up once done (i.e. no old TVs with glass screens or cans of paint) and I can't destroy the landscape with explosive targets (at least not during my first trip out there...).

Thanks for reading my post and for your input.

Get some free boxes from the liquor store. You can just chase them around with the shotgun, or tape targets on 'em and try for accuracy.

Paint different sides different colors, too! :)

*This depends of course on what kind of range facilities you have.

2 liter bottles filled with water, alka-seltzer, and food coloring of your choice. Easy clean up, biodegradable, and color exploding fun. Also like balloons with a little flour inside. They make a cool puff of smoke when hit.

On second thought scratch that. I like Dad2142Dad's idea better

ya I get my neighbors and friends to save me milk jugs and fill them at the creek near my buds backyard range

I have an idea for a soft angle iron target that is shaped to not have a bounce back, but need more data and research. I'm sick of having people break my wood ones

no one said bowling pins

also check behind the grocery, might find some old melons, or just buy them, apples are cheap and turn into nothing

get some PVC.. inch works well. 1.25" is even better... you will need SIX 90's and TWO T's. Then NINE pieces of 36" sections. ( or go with 7 at 36, and 2 at 48 for taller uprights ) Assemble with a loop at the bottom ( 90's at each corner) with the T's in the center of each side for an upright. the upright forms a loop at the top ( think ladderball stand with only a top rung ) with the last two 90's at the top corners.

Hang whatever you like on it with coat hangers or whatever ya got... light cheap. and will take down easily when done. Just dont shoot them up if you can help it... 032.gif

you can even string cheap snow fence in the center with zipties, and its cheap to replace and you can hang all kinds of targets on it with clothespins from the dollar store. 032.gif

if you need it a little more rugged... put a 6" riser in the bottom T's then a second T above that with another 36" piece for a cross brace just above the base...

Also seen people take a 5gal bucket, put PVC pipes in it for boards to go into and then fill the pale with cement ( can put 3 pipes in, one vertically and 2 at angles). For a low profile set up put PVC pipe vertically in the ground so you can drop a 2x4 in it for a stand.

Go into the DNC headquarters and quote some socialist crap. They are most likely going to give you a stack of stickers with a perfect circle on it. They will even give you signs with the metal frames already installed.

These propaganda items can be quickly converted into great targets for the range with a little black and white spray paint. All at the cost of the ones who want to take your hobby away from you.

Election years are great for obtaining lots of materials that can be used at the range.

Thanks guys for all of your input - really helped me have a great weekend of target shooting! We built several stands based on the suggestions here, as well as picked up some watermelons, bowling pins, skeet, milk jugs, and alkaseltzer among other things (never made it to the DNC headquarters...). A few lessons learned - paper targets don't hold up well in the rain. If you plan to use watermelons as targets then you better buy a lot of them. Keep it simple because in the end you want to spend more time shooting than setting up\taking down. Thanks again!
