I am trying to gather the parts to convert my Saiga as I come across them.

I ran across this UTG fore end/rail gizmo, but I don't know much about it.

A friend had it in his "stuff" and he gave it to me. Trouble is I don't know if it will fit the Saiga, I don't know if its a particulary good fore end or a piece of junk, and I don't know how easy or difficult the installation is.

Can ya help a guy out?

It will probably fit your Saiga. I'm not sure, but you may have to install a lower handguard retainer - it's been too long since I've installed a UTG quad rail to recall for sure.

You will need to install a handguard retainer for this one on your Saiga, as it fits the standard AK configuration. I am not sure if you would need a different gas tube, need to check and see.

The model MNT-HGSG39 is the one that will fit your Saiga w/o requiring a handguard retainer. If I remember correctly, it makes use of the pins protruding under the gas block of the Saiga for stability.

If you don't wind up using it, I would be interested in possibly tradiing you something for it, as I have an AK build project about to start.

Well according to the Leapers site, I'm missing the block space and shim spacers for this unit. I suppose I could get them from Leapers, but I think I should maybe do a little more research as to just how suitable this particular unit is for my gun. I hate to drop $80 on the MNT-HGSG39 mentioned, especially considering I don't have anything in this one. On the other hand, a handguard retainer(Brownells) alone takes ups 1/2 the price of the MNT-HGSG39.

I'm going to have to ponder this some........if I decide to part with it, I'll keep you in mind wpfl!

i installed that exact handguard on my saiga 223. no handguard retainers are needed. the heat sheet metal heat shield on the gas piston tube will need to be removed. there should be some sheet metal spacers and a wedge that goes between the barrel and piston tube, you may have them just dont see them in the picture. i have been happy with mine. there are 2 pictures of my rifle in the picture thead with it installed if you want to see how it looks installed. hope this helps
