Belarius Scope Mount

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, remember when I posted the "how to" on airbrushing my Saiga? Well, I painted right over the scope rail on the reciever, first with airbrush paint, then a generous amount of laquer clearcoat. I took the rifle out to the range today, and to my surprise, I was shooting much tighter than normally. Every once and a while, I get a lucky box of Wolf ammo to shoot pretty tight, but this was a little different.

I noticed that the Belarius scope mount was hard to slip on the rail after I had painted it, like it was over tight. Only instead of being too tight just in the middle where the tention adjustment is, it was tight along the entire length of the rail. I figured it was just the added thickness of the paint, and it would wear itself back to normal over time. So I slipped it on and off a few times, and forgot about it.

Well at the range, I noticed a nice differance in the groups I was shooting. I remembered the tightness of the mount over the paint, so I played with the mount a little bit. I put pressure on my scope up and down and it seemed to be much more solid over the dust cover, I put pressure on the top of the scope, then one side, then the other....No movement! It was definately the paint over the rail that tightened up the mount.

I keep my mount tight via the adjustment screw at the bottom, but with these Belarius mounts, it only helps so much. I think the paint evened up the gaps between the rail and the mount making it a much more solid platform. The mount will wear itself into the softer laquer where it makes contact with the rail, and where it doesent make contact, the laquer seems to add to its stability.

I dont know if the mount will wear itself back to normal, or if the laquer is sturdy enough to sustain the vibration and keep it this way. I just thought Id share this interesting find with my shooter buddies here. This laquer is the same as "Duplicolor Car, Truck, Van and SUV Clear Acrylic Laquer" in a spray can sold at hardware and autoparts stores. In spraycan form, it is not chemical / solvent resistant and bore cleaner will eat it up in less than a second. Just in case anyone else wants to try this. I think the same effect can be had by useing just about any paint. Even if maybe you sprayed the backside of the Belarius mount with a chemical / solvent resistant primer or black coat. Engine enamel seems to be pretty tough. That might work too. I dunno?

Anyone else have this effect after refinishing thier rifle, and putting back on the crappy scope mount?
