purpony 0
Hi All- New to the site and AK/Saiga's. I hope this is the correct location for this questions but please move it to a different location if necessary I live in CT and am Banned to only owning an Ak/Saiga in a .223 or 5.45x39 I am in search of one to purchase to add to my collection but im not sure what to buy. If I stick with the .223, i can share the same ammo from my AR, But if i go with a 5.45x39.... well, ill have a 5.45x39, LOL.... Ive been looking mainly for a 5.45x39, but it seems that .223 are a little easier to find. What should i go with and why? thanks
Cobra 76 two 2,677
I like the 5.45 the best. It costs less, I can get it in sealed 1,080 rd tins, and share ammo between my Saiga and my S&W M&P 5.45 AR.
vulcan16 971
I like the 5.45, but most of the ammo is imported. Go with the 223 in todays world.
chevyman097 2,579
The convenience of the 223 sharing ammo with the ar is nice. The 5.45 is nice too. But good luck finding ammo right now. Either way, buy soon. or you wont have anything to buy.
VR762Shooter 838
5.45. If you go that route you can maybe acquire some pre-ban 74 mags at some point
WI_Dave 26
Double post stupid smart phone lol Edited December 19, 2012 by WI_Dave
WI_Dave 26
I have both and like them both. 5.45 ammo is cheaper. I may be picking up a second saiga 223 tonight tho
Dad2142Dad 6,559
Can you even own an AK variant in CT?
akastormi 617
I went with 223 for the reasoning I have ammo. Knowing myself if I start going the 74 way, I'll want everything. One of everything, rifles, ammo, mags, slings, pouches. x39 has already created numerious piles within my dwelling. LOL
Jpanzer 1,265
Don't own a AR. My 74 loves the Russian 5.45x39 7n6 though, and a thousand rounds of it are a lot cheaper than .223 ammo, especially with the gouging going on....
yakdung 2,926
I would go with any weapon that had the most ammo availability. Good luck to you and yours going forward,
MT Predator 2,294
5.56 NATO. First move the left is going to take will most likely be a ban on imports including that cheap surplus 5.45 ammo.

And been shooting the domestic Hornady ammo.
Odd Man Out 1,283
My vote = 5.
thebuns1 4,323
I'd vote for the 5.45, but with the liklihood of the ban, Id go with the 5.56 as well. Especially since your new to the scene and just getting started.
Bvamp 604
Can you even own an AK variant in CT? the rule WAS that you cant own any weapon chambered in 7.62x39mm. lot of good that does. i believe the intent was to ban the ak47 from the state, but like i said, a lot of good that does. laws are only for those that would follow them, and would oppress the rest of us..... btw, .223 all the way.
PFerris 76
Get one of each if you can. How could you go wrong with that.
Mitch535 29
I also vote the 5.56. My VEPR in .223 doesn't chew up brass, and I handload, so it is cheaper for me to go that route.
