I picked up a welder a few weeks back, and have been dying to try something out.. Well today was the day

I started off with a factory take off Front Sight Block and chopped it down

I then shaped it on the bench grinder to fit against the factory Saiga Gas Block

Cast can be mig welded on non stuctural things like this, but other steps need to be taken when welding it in an application that actually needs any amount of structural support. I suspect the cast is what gave you fits.
