The 7.62x39 is different from the AK-74 which is 5.45 (or thereabouts). They are not interchangeable.

 

Russian mags are usually sold at a premium. I would not suggest hacking on them or modifying them but rather consider alternatives that cost less and are just as reliable. If you are looking to use AK 74 mags in a Saiga .223 rifle it can be done with mods as per Sheiks conversion advice as attached. I believe they use German Bakelites and change the followers out for Robinson .223.

If you are looking for a 7.62 AK mag that looks like the one pictured and similar to the Russian but can be found for $10-$20 consider the Polish synthetics. Northridge has them for $20. I have bought them for as little as $10 with minor flaws not effecting function.
