dubya 198
My buddy just called me and said i should check my Wolf ammo with a magnet because he heard that Wolf bullets are copper plated steel. I have 4 different kinds of Wolf right now and sure as sh*t the bullets are all magnetic. Strong magnetic too. Anyone know about this before? I would think lead would be cheaper than steel? RoughRider666 47
thats not good! that is going to greatly decrease barrel life!
dubya 198
Because it's harder? He shoots it in his AR's butbi won't shoot the cheap steel case in mine (heard it was rough on the gun) but that's all i really shoot in my Saigas!

hdskumm 39
I was saving my steel core WPA for if SHTF.
chevyman097 2,579
thats not good! that is going to greatly decrease barrel life! Not true. They are bi-metal jackets. Its not steel core ammo, rather the jacket is a metal that has a steel compound to it. The core of the bullet is still lead.
muvef 3
Yes, bi-metal jackets. A layer of copper over a layer of mild steel. The two layers form the jacket.
Gaddis 1,689
Good read on the subject here: http://www.uspsa.org/front-sight-magazine-article.php?Should-I-Buy-BiMetal-Ammo-8 I don't (personally!) run the bi metal shit in my Arsenals. Pull the bullets, and replace them with good equivalent Hornady fodder. Thank G_d for the Lee factory crimp die.
dubya 198
Okay bi metal jacket's that makes more sense now. I'm not worried about running them especially if it's a mild steel and the barrel is hard chromed i don't see a problem. I have some real steel core with a brass case (not brass washed steel) and '68 head stamp and also a few boxes of steel core 5.56 ammo. Thanks for the clarification fellas. gunfun 3,931
Also, what can you look for in product descriptions or brands to know you are not getting bi-metal?
Gaddis 1,689
Um, because it usually says bi metal somewhere on the box (or ask the clerk who you are ordering them from over the phone)? I leave the pulled bullets at my local sportsman's club in case anyone else might want to use them. I'm sure one of the members in charge of clean up regularly throws them out for me. Gaddis 1,689
I'm sure that a few 100 run through a rifle barrel won't hurt it all that much. I basically pull & replace them because I (usually? ) have lots of free time on my hands. There's only so long you can look at porn on the computer anyway.
gunfun 3,931
Just saying that some of us might be willing to buy those inferior bullets to shoot out of inferior guns. I have a few friends with AKs who are shooting wolf or whatever anyway without paying any particular attention.
dubya 198
Yeah im not concerned with shooting them. Ive only shot 1200 rounds out of mine so far but haven't noticed any accuracy loss or abnormal wear. If anything accuracy has gotten a bit better.
Gaddis 1,689
Like I said, I'm sure they are perfectly okay in a chromed AK barrel.
