Vulcan 14
I'm looking for a wood handguard- without converting over to the AK gas tube. Any ideas? Ironwood had a set for the sporter configuration, but I have a converted Saiga 12 and need the sporter handguard, a Yugo grip, and a Warsaw buttstock. Has Matt ever done that for anyone? gunfun 3,931
Sure. You can order from them piecemeal. IWD makes very nice stuff, but it is priced accordingly and still needs you to do the finish work and find hardware. If you buy from them, my strong vote would be to get a stock with the butpad option and specify that it come to warsaw length. I think a Tabuk kit with dinzag's '74 "brake" would look very good. Sadly they have taken teak off the menu. Another route is a bit more DIY. Get a retainer for a lower HG from dinzag or the one that Kvar makes. I prefer the KVAR style from the distance of the internet, but either should work. Then hog out a standard AK forend to fit. There is little room for error, but it is doable with many styles. Here is how I did mine: Guide Comfortable Wood Goodness with a modern touch. - Tech Section - forum.Saiga-12.com note that I made my own retainers, and would recommend buying rather than building.

Nemo61066 10
I did a search and came up with the same answers as everybody else. My budget at the time did not allow for the cost of Iron Wood Designs stock kit so I made my own. Worked out great.
gunfun 3,931
This thread has a couple more pictures of the iniside of the handguard. '74 grips get pretty thin over the palm swell, but are mostly supported by the barrel once you install them. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/74112-advise-me-on-dyeingstaining-wood-aka-stock-options/ I noticed that neither thread had many pics of the inside of the handguard and I am sure I took more comparative pictures to show what had to be removed. Here are a few:

It looks like the sides are flat planes, but maybe I just can't see contour from the pic.
Deadeye 325
I also made a wood set for the s12 its not realy that hard and the sks vented gas tube cover finishes it off perfectly I still want to get the tools to do checkering someday. Maby I could build you one if you were willing to wait for me to get it done Edited February 25, 2013 by deadeye
Jpanzer 1,265
RusMilitary sells wooden hand guards for the S12. Bought one from them a while back, and later sold it. http://www.rusmilitary.com/html/ak_furniture.htm Looks like they are out of stock though...
SaigaKen 338
I found one http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/85687-wooden-s12-handguard-finishedvented-one-piece/
Cobra 76 two 2,677
Post #12 in this thread shows what my '74 HGs looked like after I modified them for my S-12 in my avatar. Anything ya want to know about putting wood HGs on an S-12 can be found there. If I had it to do over again I would have simply removed the GB and got the retainers tig welded to it, then pressed it back on to retain the HGs. It was 2005 though and the first such conversion of it's kind, and I didn't know anything much back then except I was gonna have that ugly ass shotgun looking like a real AK, whatever it took.... yes including JB Weld. pedal2alloy 206
That's right! Cobra was the pioneer who paved the way for others to follow. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/5178-cobras-aks-12-conversion-details/
gunfun 3,931
Interesting. Either Cobra's 74 bulgy grips had more meat to start with or his old barrel needed less room. That is one of my favorite threads the dead links make me sad.

Deadeye 325
the sks gas tube cover is an exact fit with a little squeeze to make it stay on there tight.
