I tried to tell her about all of the names released in new york news papers, violating the privacy of those gun owners, and leaving them vulnerable to any criminal who reads the paper. She didnt get it. Then she said something like, 'what if your guns get stolen, this law would help you get them back'. I then realized how misinformed she actually was. She didnt seem to believe me when I said that our current serial number system takes care of every gun you own, as long as you keep a catalog of your serial numbers, then can give your 'proof of ownership' to the police if they get stolen. Then, if that serial number comes up, bang, they know its yours. She then brought up the point of past mental history, telling me that if this system was in place, the aurora shooter may not have been able to get his weapon in the first place. She seemed appalled when I reminded her that 'precautions' like this will hamper millions upon millions of people, who have gotten prescribed antidepressants or anti anxiety drugs in the past, even once. Let alone the myriad of reasons the government could make up to restrict you. It just boils down to reactionary bullshit. Uninformed people will grasp at any straw to make their points seem correct to others. These morons will think nothing to restrict rights, freedoms and security from tens of millions of people, when we can count modern perpetrators of mass shootings on our fucking fingers, and their victims within one hundred.
