Anyone here do skeet with their Saiga 12?

Recommended Posts

Its not a typical platform for this sport, at least around my neck of the woods. Lots of the guys use highly decorated 40 foot long double barreled shotguns. Misunderstood is really what I would describe it. The regulars are curious. I'm a relative new comer on skeet, having started a few months ago.

My average score is not the best, probably get around 15-16 out of 25 on most rounds. Today was different however. Nice weather, nice breeze. Did two sets today and score my highest so far. I made 19 on my second round. Coulda made 23, but started to fuck up once I realized I had a perfect score halfway through the course.

I'm definitely hooked.

What kind of choke are you using? I have used a choke adaptor with a full choke. Although I have had some success with the full choke there is much room for improvement.

PolyChoke II set on IC.

I have attempted to shoot trap with my VEPR 12 with a polly choke set to pull, and the next step down from full. But couldnt hit shit. Guess I need to give her another chance. But Just doesnt seem very effective. Longer barrels make a huge difference in trap/skeet.

I find that a good open sight offers a bigger advantage than a longer barrel (past 19 inches). I've also shot skeet with my VEPR 12 with a red dot installed. I found that having that setup confined my field of view too much it was difficult to lead the small clay luck zooming across the field.

For my S12, I had a Russian FSB installed and also widened the rear sight notch. This offered me an almost unobstructed field of view and I have a much easier time chasing down the clay pucks.

I tried, and did OK for a noob. It was fun.

Any limitations were definitely due to 'the indian' rather than arrow. I used the lightweight build. I honestly think that I am so used to the saigas that using a standard shotgun would feel as weird to me as mine would feel to the skeet guys.

I was slightly disappointed that they suggested open choke. I was so pleased to have a proper choke assailable. Most of the people there were pretty fun.

A week ago we took a standard IZ-109 to the range with the SGMT choke pack to test it out. After being jeered by everyone for the "crutch" we brought on the field, my cousin and I began the skeet shoot. My cousin got away with an 11 out of 25. (This is for the guy that was the state clay pigeon shooter for four years straight.) Next time we will bring the long barrel S12.

It was the good thing we still have the bolt hold open on the shotgun lest we would have been escorted off the range.
