Tromix 444 Marlin Saiga?????

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a .410 Saiga today which I planned to convert to an SBS, but it appears that it would run 444 Marlin ammo with a simple barrel swap. Any thoughts on this?

I imagine the market would be pretty small though.

How much for JUST A barrel??? and would it be the SAME DIMENSION as the original 410 barrel?

What I mean is would it be possible to press out the 410 barrel, and press in the 444 marlin barrel and go to town!

The next ?? then is HOW MUCH for a whole rifle???

Quote me a price by feb, Tony... If you plan to make a couple "prototypes"... If the price is right, you can chalk one up on the Sold list right now!

The Marlin is 2.5 overall, and my gun is an old 3" only gun. I can probably get it to feed them anyway with a new barrel, but it would probably be best to run it in a newer gun with 2.5" mags.

Barrel blanks run anywhere from $100 - $300, but on something like this, a $100 blank would work just fine. At this point I don't know exactly what all would be involved to get it to work, but my guess would be around $300-$500 on the customer's gun. That is a wide spread, but I just don't know how much time it would take until I do one.

I would attempt the first one at material cost, NO LABOR, if anyone wants to pony up to the bar. A chamber reamer would run about $140 and a barrel blank about $115 shipped, plus shipping back to the customer, so you are looking at $270. If it doesn't work, you're out $270 and your gun goes back as a .410.

That's how the first Tromix SBS was done and the customer is very happy. I used to finance all the R&D work, but it's just too expensive with a one man shop to continuously buy stuff to make one-off prototypes.

Well, as I said... I will need till FEB to pony up ANY loot... ( Thats when the IRS sends me my annual "gun fund" check)

I am sure you will have this either on the back burner waiting to go... or will have it past R&D by then...

If nothing happens by then... I will get the reamer, the blank, and whatever else it was you said I need... a spare .410... and we can do the deed!

If ya got one squared away by then... Maybe the price will be adjusted accordingly... we may STILL be able to make it so!!!

Just to add... to be clear...

IF NO ONE wants to step in for dibs... and you are willing to wait till feb, Tony...

I will throw a .410 on the fire for you to hammer out something....

I bought a Saiga 410 a year ago for the EXACT same reason. The only thing holding me back has been getting on the ball with a few major calculations on rearward thrust. Main difference would be that I would use a levergun barrel instead of a blank.

In fact, if you search a few of the major forums you might find threads of mine on the subject dated a year or more back.

Another reason I haven't done it yet is that my primary use would probably be Canadian hunting, where the Saigas are all banned. Your Mega-14 caught me eye as something that would be Canada legal.

Honestly, I'd most likely do it myself if I were to sink the money into the materials. But I would be one happy camper to see it done.
