thefitter 5
Its my understanding that the Vepr 12 grip screw is flared at the grip nut and difficult to remove.Does the grip use a standard AK screw and grip nut? Thanks
iron808 1
You'll find that the screw threads have been staked, center punched to kill the threads instead of Loctite like we would use, it can be difficult to remove. If you have someone who can hold it for you or have a gun vise you can do something similar as I did. I used a very large square shaft screw driver that I was able to use a crescent wrench on for extra leverage to remove it. It is a standard AK screw. Good luck! thefitter 5
Thanks. I wanted to know if I needed to have another grip nut ready. The new grip should come with a new screw.
ec4321 113
I've taken a few Vepr-12 grips off, it's like wrestling a pig in mud, but it's doable. I didn't have any problems with the nuts afterwards. I also reused the screws. Once I drew them back through the nut, they were still tight to screw in/out but not nearly as bad as drawing it out that first time. One guy destroyed the screw head and possibly the grip on his Vepr as reported here. Another user says he drills into the end of the screw a bit to relieve the extreme flaring. What is the thread and pitch? Maybe I have a tap that I can chase them with if needed. Edited June 20, 2013 by thefitter
Mullet Man 2,114
Find a screw driver that fits tightly. As tight as it is since it's staked, it's important to use the correct size flat head screw driver on it. A T-handle flat head would be ideal. Check CSS website. They sell a couple replacements and might list the thread pitch in one of the ads.
thefitter 5
M6x1.0, which I have. It's great they use standard threads. My M14s have all crazy proprietary threads.
