Rhodes1968 1,638
I dont award tinfoil hats or homers but very rarely. If you buy this explanation given all the hula surrounding it for this long then ya get both. Guess those 7000 armored vehicles were the result of sneeze.

breid1970 327
7000 armored vehicles? The Marine Corps has roughly 900 LAV-25s. That number sounds fishy. Edited June 22, 2013 by breid
JoeAK 337
7000 armored vehicles? The Marine Corps has roughly 900 LAV-25s. That number sounds fishy. It was 2,700 armored vehicles, 7,000 M4/M16s.
Rhodes1968 1,638
Thanks for the catch, went back and reread the piece. http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorials/030513-646857-dhs-buys-special-armored-fighting-vehicles.htm Not a purchase from a vendor but a retrofit and transfer from US Army of 2.7k MRAP vehicles for service on the streets of the U.S. And yeah breid that's a crap load even at 2.7k , we forget some folks still haven't heard of this, the above link is reputedly a dependable source, many others out there. So damn much going on. Edited June 22, 2013 by Rhodes1968
read_the_wall 614
We need the rescue vehicles to give aid to the endless amount of Illegal aliens and drug transporters that are hot and thirsty out in our deserts. They need rides to the nearest hospitals and then off to find out which of the endless federal programs they can sign up for..........

sean8642 77
That number of vehicles came from a press release from the makers of the MRAPs, when they stated they were upgrading them for the Army and Marine Corps. They never said they were to be retrofitted to use in the US by DHS. It's the identical number used in the press release of the upgrade announcement that other websites are using as a number of MRAPs obtained by DHS.
sean8642 77
The Navistar website has the actual press release, but this was the easiest to find on my phone http://www.defenseprocurementnews.com/2012/03/15/navistar-defense-receives-mrap-installation-order-press-release/ 2717 is said to be the number of aquired MRAPs to DHS, yet the only record of this number is a chassis upgrade to actual military vehicles... Rhodes1968 1,638
Looking at the release it seems the vehicles are refitted for use in more of an urban environment. They will be more comfortable now with the new suspension. DHS has not denied the acquisition in fact they have been rather proud of it, showing them off at all opportunity as they came online. sean8642 77
http://www.businessinsider.com/homeland-security-serving-warrants-mrap-2013-3 Look at the bottom of that page. Thr update states what I said, and adds they have a whopping 16 MRAPs to serve high risk warrants.
Rhodes1968 1,638
Well not so fast now they are claiming 32 leaving the door open for more while of course claiming no plans to purchase more at this time. Yet the door remains open to transfer some of them at a later date. Same spokesman made both statements. http://www.hstoday.us/industry-news/general/single-article/claim-dhs-putting-thousands-of-armored-personnel-vehicles-on-streets-not-true-dept-says/7c43624e204e539aa05cc73f772d6c58.html I think they underestimated the fallout and are doing damage control, damn sure aint trusting a spokesman's word, certainly not trusting any future intentions. Time will tell.
breid1970 327
I think we can safely say that this might have been blown out of proportion.

Time will tell. Just says DHS has 16, border patrol has 16. An examination of DHS contracts for the past year show no purchases of MRAPs, nor do they show any Requests for Proposals indicating the department has plans to purchase large numbers of MRAPs. Either way it's a far stretch from nearly 3,000 MRAPS. Propaganda can be a two way street....
