Find one for me and me love you long time. lol maybe not that but I'd appreciate any help.

I might just cave and get a 23 inch off armslist or something but I'm trying to hold out.

I totally agree, you can always chop it down but there is no "miracle grow" for barrels! Keep fighting the good fight, if I see one I will let you know :) P.S. There is a shipment of Vepr's coming this summer just like last. 1500 various styles no vendors have been asked for their orders yet but it looks like possible late June to August time frame. <Multiple sources>

I think it is a bit inflated but they are just not any out there, so the price might be realistic given the uniqueness. You never really know if you will see that model again, so I say if you love it, do it! I like it a lot but am trying to find a 23" that I passed on for around $800, we will see. Good luck, let us know if you pull the trigger!

that price is killing me. arms of america has a 23 inch version for about 1100 after shipping. with a few add ons included. with the money id save id get that russian scope ive had my eye on.

Thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/321060783116?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649

either get the 23 inch and the scope or get the 1500$ 27 incher and wait awhile til I save up more project money. decisions...

someone correct me if im wrong, but, that scope on eBay is an SVD type mount it looks like. The vepr requires the posp with the ak style mount. If you're just linking that scope as a reference and already know this, disregard what I said. :)

im also torn about the vepr have a 20 round magazine for .308 and just a ten round for the .54r

1 - I feel like a moron for not keeping up on things... Despite what you think of those prices, they are WAY down from 9 months ago... Just go buy the gun, clean it, oil it, name it, and snuggle it at night... Then kick Captain Hero in his ginger nuts for not emailing me about the increased availability, and decreased cost, of the platform BEFORE I bought an LC-9 last weekend, decimating what little was left of my gun budget. ;)

2 - There is no debate, for me, between .308 and x54R in the VEPR platform... x54R wins hands down in ammo cost alone (even in this market you can find 440 cans of STEEL CORE x54R for $90 pretty easily). I want a x54R VEPR just as a range toy. If my life depended on my rifle, the VEPR (in .308 OR x54R) would stay home for weight and ammo scavenging alone and my x39 AK would be going with me (frankly... I'd be tempted to just go with my 22LR pistol and rifle and carry a boatload of rounds... possibly with my newly purchased LC-9 in a cross draw holster)... If I somehow ended up in a Rambo or Straw Dogs situation, it would be bye-bye birdie to the bad guys as I would have the x54R VEPR, x54R 1891/30 (with Musket-ish barrel length and... *ahem* "custom" scope mount), my x39 AK, S-12, AND my .45s all sitting in a neat little row with piles of mags (well... stripper clips for the Mosin) sitting next to them. I suppose the ultimate conclusion to my debate is that I wouldn't want to drag the weight, or mag limitations (20 OR 10) of anything in .308 or x54R around in a real survival situation. Even my 10/22 has 25 round mags...

Those are my opinions (other than the fact that Captain Hero needs a swift kick to the nuts... He knows I want one of these, he has my email address, and he left me hangin'... He's still cool tho.. ;) ) and are probably not shared by everyone. Normally I would tell you to got handle a few, shoot a couple, and make your  mind up.. VEPRs are scarce enough in most circles that it just isn't a realistic option for perspective buyers. I recommend you buy an 18" x54R VEPR, *HATE IT*, then sell it to me at half price. ;)

Good luck in your hunt! Hope you find what you're looking for!

long time no talk max.

I am about to put a order in for the vepr. but Im torn on the availability of ammo in a shit hit the fan setting because. if you run out of ammo. good luck finding more. I keep thinking id have better luck finding .308 big time. WHich is why im starting to get interested in M1As again. Id be happy with either. But I know theres no way Id be lugging a 54r ammo crate around with me as im looking for shelter or what have you.

Indeed... I've been keeping a low profile lately...

I believe I laid out a SHTF scenario pretty clearly. You can buy 10,000 rounds of steel core x54R for about $2k (probably less if you call the vendor and tell them you want to purchase such a large amount). How much more do you need? Off load a case or two at friendly locations and keep 8k rounds on hand.

I know an huge gang of local gun "nuts" and I only know 1 guy that owns a .308. If ammo availability in a plundering situation is your concern, then .22LR or .223 are the only choices to consider. Those are both far and away the most popular rifle rounds in the US.

If you want a solid high power rifle, with dirt cheap ammo, then x54R is the only way to go. Frankly, I have my own doubts about the VEPR platform, but the price of x54R is enough to make me move past it... In .308, no deal...
