I decided I needed one in a 16" and another one in the ~21" barrel length as I was chasing two different looks. I'm not sold on the furniture on the 21" rifle and may at some point change it out. I really like the CSS tri-rail on the 16" barrel and may go the same route on the 21" rifle. I finished them off by moving the front sites back threading both barrels to 5/8 -24 and then re-crowning them using tools from Dinzag. The are both sporting Beenie Cooley tactical muzzle brakes which work awesome. I will be putting a decent scope on the 21" for some distance shooting as I borrowed one from one of my Ruger 10/22's just to see how it would do out to 300 yards. I couldn't see the point of impact but I was hitting the 2' X 2' steel gong every time.

I like the longer one better as well, I contemplated cutting the barrel back to about 18 inches but decided to leave well enough alone. I painted it with Duracoat ultra flat tactical black and the 16" was done in snow grey.

You are correct, you will need a bolt on hand guard retainer and a gas tube from an ak74 for the upper. I believe I happen to have a spare hand guard retainer that I purchased from Dinzag and didn't use due to changing my mind on my 16" 308.
