SaigaKen 338
Got nailed the other day........89 in a 55 out on the highway...... patriot 7,197
Escort or passport are usually on top of the reviews
gunman1 1,753
They are illegal to poses in Virginia, and probably other states also....be careful where you travel with it.
Voltia 375
Virginia, and Pennsylvania, I do believe, are the only two. OP may be boned. I run a cheapie Cobra. Passport and Valentine are the good ones. Escort is next tier down, I think. So, if you want one in an illegal state, then you need an in car one, which gets expensive.
Dad2142Dad 6,559
Cobra XRS 9345 Last ticket was over 5 years ago. Please keep in mind that no detector will help at that speed with instant on or laser. Get a detector and slow down a little bit.
adjc 171
had the escort passport 8500 x50 and it is a very good detector as a matter of fact i still have it. i upgraded to the escort redline and this thing is awesome it has twin antennae and performs well. with total shield technology makes it invisible to radar detector detector's. i drive anywhere from 600-800 miles a week mostly interstate driving and i really need all the help i can get.....won't use anything but these. they have proven to me that spending the extra money and you'll get it right the first time. been through many budget priced detectors! none are totally safe you can still get tickets....but when running with the flow of traffic these do very well on distance. breid1970 327
Hey AA, I got drilled back in the early 90's up by Williamsberg doing 93 in a 55. After the fine and the 6 month suspended license I swore I would never speed again. the judge was awesome. He even through in 40 hours community service. What a nice guy. lol. Whatever you do, don't confuse radar detector with a jammer. I believe they might be illegal in more then a few states.

Any suggestions on a very good radar detector I have been reading reviews on Amazon, but not certain on a price (dont want to cheap out, but dont want to overpay) here is a great suggestion, and it won't cost you a red cent; don't speed. 89 in a 55, you're just lucky you didn't get thrown in jail, like you would in some states. not only will you pay big on the ticket, and possibly get your license suspended, and possibly get a reckless speeding charge, your insurance rate is more then likely going to go through the roof, or canceled, then you'll have to get SR-22, and pay a high premium for that simply not worth all that. NM0 586
All ears on the detectors. Ran a Cobra long ago and still got popped by an airplane. Don't even want to recall numbers and insurance rates when I had the muscle cars. When we got out here it was rare to see a cop. Once a month if that. More and more nowadays and the tickets are starting to pop up again. Traffic court and school (not cheap) has kept the insurance goons off my back so far. Slow down is a great concept....good luck with that.
GREYLUPO 358
I was caught doing 117 in a 70 in WI in 05 I was riding back from OH on my suped up hayabusa. I've ridden about 600 miles that day with a 20 pound pack on and was tired. I had my headphones in listening to music under my helmet laying on my tank just flying down the freeway. Soon people started flashing brights at me and waving. I thought man I must look really focking cool or something. I sit up and a state cop was right on my ass lights flashing. I pulled over, took the keys out and dropped them next to me on the ground. He practically runs up, says "what the fu@k boy!" "I've been following you for five miles doing 110 plus what the hell is wrong with you?" I explained to him I was really tired and just wanted to get home blah blah blah. He said he used to own a couple bikes in his younger days and will cut me a break. Gave me an 89 in a 70 and let me go. Cost me $350 but he could have impounded my bike and yanked my DL. Nicest cop I ever met!
NM0 586
You got lucky GREYLUPO. Some rides on some roads...hopefully when no one is around...just BEGS for three digits. I'm sure others will and will not agree. Edited August 19, 2013 by NM0
coronet 131
I don't speed at all anymore. 87 suburban, lol. I drive about 45 miles to work, one way and usually know the spots they hide out in, sometimes they surprise me. Might see one, maybe two cops a month on a desolate hiway. A few months ago, I was going about 58 (speed limit 60) , and this Dodge Rumble Bee bright yellow pickup passed me like I was standing still. He had to be over 100. Go over an overpass, and several miles down the road saw the flashing lights. That truck isn't common around here. Saw it on a used car lot a month or so later. I bet he had a sucky day. Plus, like NMO said, you can't out run an airplane. I have a Passport radar detector out in a box in the garage somewhere. I might put it in my old Challenger when I get it up to snuff. THAT car will probably get me in trouble.
yakdung 2,926
Valentine One. It is the only one to own IMHO, It has multiple antennas and gives you 360 degree coverage. I have had one since the day they were released. http://www.valentine1.com/

Well 80 MPH is automatically reckless operation, and I'll tell ya what, I wouldn't want to get caught with a detector in this commonwealth, they'd set the fuken jail on top of you. Alott has changed since the 90s folks.
pbwe 45
I'll second the Vanentine One. Don't speed much nowadays, but the jurisdictions are tight for cash and all leniency is going away. (if speeding does not get you, the rolling stop or unsignalled lane change will) It's nice to know where they are in any case (V1 delineates multiples of front, side, and rear origins), and even going with the flow can be 15 over, so when it alarms I check my speed. The lasers are challenging, but the V1 has detected them with good lead time provided you are not the first in line, but immediate braking/down shifting is advised in any case. Had my first one stolen when a friend was using it, replaced it for 300 off craigslist with current software. I wish he would come up with a discrete, permanent mount, small front and rear windshield mount satellite detectors that could be wired to a concealable dash unit. Despite the added install work, having the satellite option would be nice.
G O B 3,516
I have a lead foot, but I have learned (in the School of Hard Knocks and Sharp blows to the Head) how to avoid those damned tickets. Never be the fastest thing on the road! I go with the faster traffic, and wait for somebody faster. Then I can follow the bear bait from as far back as I can still see them. Never follow then close enough that when the cop pulls out they will be behind YOU! I have to be extra carefull since I replaced the old Grang Cherokee with a '99 K2500 Suburban with 7.4L (454). The silly thing will sneak right up to 75 and never get above 2,500 rpm. Genuine 'Cowboy Cadilac' bought it in Austin!

I'll let the bait blaze on in the left lane. I stay in the right lane, keep them in sight and work around slower traffic in the left lane but always move back to the "slow" lane. I have to use some sort of tactic as my Camaro Super Sport stands out anyway and gets pinged by radar a lot regardless how fast I'm going.

IndyArms 10,189
I have the XTR 695 from Whistler. THE ABSOLUTE BEST radar detector under 200 bucks! Sure you can spend double that for the escort or the valentine... will they save your butt twice as well... probably not.. I have run whistlers since the day when I had Spectrum 2 SE... I wouldnt buy anything else...
termite 463
I use the OLE LADY model, she just sits over there in her seat and keeps harping about how fast I'm running and how we just passed a state trooper up in the woods, but most don't even bother if you aren't going more than 5 over, and with the dually pulling the 5th wheel, that's plenty damn fast. Capt Nemo 883
I just keep it in cruise at limit +5, and don't worry at all! I drive 25-33K a year mostly at night.
Big John! 2,062
I'm with the non speeders any more. Much simpler than constantly playing the game for me. It helps a lot having a 75 mph speed limit here in CO as I don't really feel the need to go much faster. Haven't had a ticket in almost probably ten years. The biggest benefit to that for me (aside from the obvious) is that the DMV keeps sending me 5 year licences cuz I've been a good boy. I love this. When I was driving truck I had an Escort which was the shit at the time. Judging by the above statements it sounds like they are still holding their own. Just to confirm what some have said above... I was doing around 10-15 over whatever the speed limit was out in the middle of the desert in Arizona and all was quiet. All off a sudden the Escort lit up solid without any warning. Next thing the headlights come on from behind a bush. I just pulled over as there was no getting outta that one. If I traveled more, I'd have one and probably the best I could afford. I like knowing where they are whether speeding or not.
coronet 131
Valentine/Escort/Passport all used to be the same company. I don't know if that's still true. They used to advertise that they would pay your speeding ticket, if you got one.
yakdung 2,926
Mike Valentine started his own company separate from Passport / Escort. Mike I believed designed the first escort. His company builds a better mouse trap IMHO.
Conscript 99
Escort Redline, trust me I used to have a traffic attorney on speeddial. If you don't believe me check comparisons. Be prepared to drop $500, however it will pay for itself and isn't "hope in a plastic box" like others. Stay away from Cobra whatever you do.

I sold my 2010 2Dr JK rock crawlin beast because it did not have enough space for all my gear, I didn't do enough rock crawling, and mostly that I was tired of making car payments. I was happy with the 3.8L V6 until getting back into a Chevy. It is definitely the 'Cowboy Cadilac'. Loving it so far. Also concur on using a 'blocker', let some other fool run cover for you As soon as you see them slam on their brakes you know what is up ahead may ruin your day!
