24x1.5mm on a .591" .223?

Recommended Posts

Because I am an idiot (or so some would say), I am not figuring this out.

I have a .591" dia. .223. I have abandoned the idea of threading it to 1/2-28 as I can't do it and it's gonna cost too much to have done.

Will a 24x1.5mm tap/die work?

I read an old thread that someone couldn't get a 14x1 tap/die to thread his barrel.

FML.

You will need to run a 15x1 RH die first , to reduce the barrel size , then , you use the 14x1 LH die to finally thread the .591 barrel correctly . After that you can use an AK-74 brake but you will need a 24 mm adapter . The genuine AK-74 zig-zag brakes have 24mm threads . That adapter will have a 14x1 LH interior thread to screw on the barrel and a 24mm exterior thread so the brake will screw on it . The adapter is easily obtainable , cost is around $10.00 and it is sold usually along the brakes .

FSB

I've done this swap on a 5.45x39 and it was fairly easy. I'm preparing to do this same thing again on a 7.62x39 and a 223 I've just recently acquired.

If You can't thread 1/2-28, a '74 FSB won't fit without reaming it out. You should just barely be able to thread the muzzle 14 -1. My 223 (ca. 2006) has the heavier profile bbl and I was able to thread it 14 -1, add the 24mm adapter and then 74 break. 000.gif

Yeah, I found that out after even more reading. Got pissed and went back to buying shit for the AR. Hahaha.

I'll look into 14-1 with an adapter. THANK YOU.

Just to add to confusion (JK).

I went with swapping the FSB for Bulgy kit with AK-74 compensator on my 5.45.

Much easier than threading the .591 barrel (done both, can attest from personal experience).

So you got the bulgy FSB 5.45 to fit on your .591 .223 barrel?

Can somebody clear this up because I've been looking at FSB and GBs as well.

From what I understand the Bulgy AK74 has FSB journal of .575 which would be too small for the .591 Saiga .223. Now I've read in some posts on this board that some of the Saiga .223s have an AK101 journal which is suppose to be the same as the Bulgy AK74. But in researching the journal for the AK101 some authorities state .591, some .575 and I've seen .571.

The GB looks even more problematic with a number of builders having to re-contour the thicker barrels.

I borrowed some calipers and did some more research on this issue.

Standard Bulgarian AK74 specs are .571 at the FSB and .590 at the GB. Or 14.5mm and 15mm.

My Saiga .223, SLR106, and Saiga x39 all measured  .571 and .590 immediately behind the block.

I don't have a .591 barrel.

And yes, my Saiga .223 barrel has grooves for the hand guard retainer.

The Bulgy FSB is profiled at 14.5mm and the gas block is 15mm. So there is no way either of these fitting a .591 barrel.

Sorry: I should be more clear in my blabbery...

I swapped the FSB on my 5.45 Saiga, installing Bulgarian AK-74 FSB and comp.

Threading .591 barrel in 1/2x28 was separate, "P.I.T.A." project, done on .223 Saiga.

I had my .591 barrel turned down and threaded 1/2 28 ,so I could run the more available AR flashhiders and muzzlebreaks .

How much did it run you?  Everywhere around here is wanting like $160 and that's without a muzzle device.

The guy welded up the holes in the receiver, made a FSB/GB by cutting and welding the 2 together, cut the notch for the hand guard retainer, turned down the barrel and threaded 1/2 -28 and parkerized the whole rifle for $160.

The guy worked at Elk River Tool&Die when they were in Houston. I have been trying to get ahold of him for some more work , but no luck.

Do you need to "clean off" the 15x1 RH threads with a file or sanding...before you start the 14x1 LH die on a 0.591 barrel?

Also Dinzag also carries a 15x1 RH ak74 style brake which is bored out/ threaded to cover up to the FSB.
