This is only two miles from my house. I've seen the trailer there about 50 times while driving by. LOL, I thought someone was making a new home there.

HAMPTON -- How does one steal a 70-foot-long mobile home?

With a tractor, apparently.

Police are investigating the theft of a partially furnished mobile home that was parked on a trailer for weeks at a Route 4 restaurant before someone hitched it up and drove off with it.

The owner has offered a $2,500 reward for recovery of the home, which is worth about $50,000.

Washington County sheriff’s Investigator Bruce Hamilton said the owner, a central Vermont resident, purchased the home through the federal government and had it parked in Hampton in mid-August to await delivery to Vermont.

Hamilton said he believed it was a mobile home that had been used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Vermont requires police escorts for transportation of mobile homes, and the owner had “staged” it at the Hampton lot just west of Vermont to arrange for the escort, Hamilton said.

The parking lot is often used for the same purpose by those transporting trailers into Vermont.

“He got sick and had to have emergency surgery and when he came back a few weeks later to get it, it was gone,” Hamilton said.

It was not secured.

The Sheriff’s Office described the home as a 2009 Pine Grove series GH016-496 mobile home. It measures 16 feet wide and 70 feet long, and is tan in color. It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, central air conditioning and some furniture inside.

It had been parked at The Big Apple Diner from mid August until Sept. 23, when someone apparently hitched it to a tractor -- the type used as the tractor portion of a tractor trailer -- and towed it away, police said.

A witness saw the trailer being towed away around 5 p.m. that day, Hamilton said.

The tractor and its cargo were last seen headed toward Vermont, which is about a mile east of the diner.

Anyone with information in the case was asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 747-4623.

Wow, that is just about the last thing on earth I thought someone would be able to get away with stealing. I think it may be kinda noticeable somebody hooking it up and driving off!

Noticeable? ...yes. But trailers are hauled all the time so you (I) would think that the one hooking up to it was supposed to!

Alright, I'll admit it... Me and some of the other frozenbrains stashed it behind PK hill. We're sick of the state housing... Had to do it....

My guess.... total theory... is that the rightful owner has it dismantled by now and will collect insurance money. Can you say "home free", or something like that?

Valid point! I guess if I witnessed a Tractor hooking up to the mobile home in broad daylight, I would think the same!

  • 2 weeks later...

anything like this has to have a flag escort of some kind .... cause of it being long n a wide load ...

That is the reason it was originally parked. VT requires 4 escorts and special permits for that size trailer. While waiting for the permits the "owner" was admitted for an emergency surgery....

They have upped the reward. LOL

Since it IS a mobile home, they should try offering season passes to NASCAR for information leading to its return! throw in an old pick up truck full of moonshine and every redneck in the country would be looking for it.
