Fitting German Weiger and Polish Beryl 556 Mags

Recommended Posts

I just received several Weiger and Beryl magazines for my Saiga 223.  I've read several threads about making these magazines fit my rifle but most of them involve removing some material from the rear of the mag well by the mag release.  Is there any other way of removing material from the magazines alone without altering the rifle or is this the norm?  When I insert the mag I can see the back of the magazine hitting the rear of the mag well which is where it seems like I could remove a little from the mags to make them fit.  If modding the rifle is the best route I can do so but I would prefer to alter the mags. Any opinions or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

The are I'll concentrate on will be the front of the magazine where it touches the trunnion.  This seems to be the area most people are suggesting to get it to fit.  I'm willing to sacrifice a magazine if necessary to get a proper fit for the others.  If this doesn't seem like it will work I'll consider removing some material from the rear of the magwell.

No material needs to be removed from the receiver for the Beryl mags. Just need to remove some material from the front of the magazine where the magazine locks in under the front trunnion locking lugs.

The other alternative is to machine the bottom of the trunnion locking lugs to remove enough material to match them to the size of AK-74 locking lugs - this will allow the S223 to accept Bulgarian C10 and Beryl mags without modifying the mags. This would require some precise work with an end mill bit on a drill press.

See this image - unmodified left, modified right. See that the only area modified is the front of the mag.

Make sure that the mags snap in smoothly - too tight and the steel reinforcements can become bent.
